...I was looking at Rotten tomatoes today and some of the things critics picked on...I don't understand why top critics sometimes choose animation quality as a setback. A movie is not made by its special effects, or its animation. A movie is made by its STORY. At least, in my book, that is always what has really been the heart of a good film. Are the right camera angles, the best animation you can get, and dazzling special effects a plus? Of course they are. But I'm really perturbed when that's all a person chooses to see.
I mean, me, as an artist? I really appreciate fantastic techniques, and when something is well-rendered, I often stop and go "ooooo"...but my favorite works of art are the ones that evoke a feeling. And I've noticed my favorite films run along that same vein.
I like movies that make you think. I like movies that remind me of my past. I like movies that inspire me as an artist and an individual. I like movies that keep me engaged throughout the entire film. I like movies that have a lot of real clever thought put into them. I like movies that take me on a journey, and that teach me a lesson as we go through that journey. I like movies that make me FEEL....and that is a very broad description.
These days it's admittedly VERY difficult to impress me when it comes to films. I might still go see a movie and enjoy it, but there's so few that truly pull me in and make me go "That was a truly fantastic experience." I do however wish I could smack a few critics around. They apparently have different criteria on what makes a good movie as opposed to mine. :P
