tasty history

I've been intensely aware of "songs and movies I want to enjoy with my children", even though I probably won't have children for quite a few years. Perhaps that's why I'm trying to make a list, so that I don't forget.

So far...
Movies: Mirrormask, Labyrinth, Marx Brothers movies, Hayao Miyazaki movies, certain Jan Svankmajer animations, Monty Python, Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, Top Secret, Hot Shots and other such silly movies, and of course The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension.

For music it's pretty much just what seems obvious, like Shonen Knife, the 5.6.7.8's, Puffy Amiyumi, you know, bands that are inspired by/make fun of the quintessential Gen X children's bands- the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Little Richard. Obviously I can only think of Japanese rock bands because American rock bands have forgotten how to be ridiculously cute, charming, and SILLY!
...not that i can claim much knowledge about american rock bands to begin with...
ok, combing through some of my music... Architecture in Helsinki, Devo, Cibo Matto (here we are back to Japanese bands), Lemon Jelly, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Mr. Scruff, and maybe if I wanted to warp their minds some Mr. Bungle or John Zorn. It's interesting how bands like Mum or Boards of Canada are considered to have such cute childlike music, but probably wouldn't actually appeal to kids that much.
