Indian temple considers ban on donation of elephants

Authorities at a Hindu temple in southern India are considering a ban on the donation of elephants by devotees.

The Krishna temple at Guruvayur temple in Kerala says it can't afford to have any more because it can't pay for their upkeep.

The temple now has 62 elephants and says donors will have to pay about £5,194 for the upkeep of the elephant they donate.

Devotees have also been offered the option of being able to "donate an elephant" symbolically by just paying the equivalent of £6,492 instead of giving it away physically.

It's reported if the two options don't work, the temple will call for a "moratorium" on elephant donations.

Businessmen, politicians and film personalities are now competing with one another in donating elephants at Guruvayur.

A temple spokesman told the Hindustan Times: "Several applications are pending with us. We're forced to announce some restrictions. Earlier we used to get an elephant or two in every two to three years, but now four to five are coming in a year."
