It's something my Men's Ministry Pastor, Barney, says all the time.
"stand in the gap"
He ends all of his e-mails with that phrase.
"stand in the gap"
everytime I read it in passage Ezekiel 22:30 I take it kind of literally, to stand in the gap, I try to read it further and interpret it but I can't really do that too well. That's why I got a Life Application Study Bible, and it's version is the New American Standard Bible. It's Amazing, it helps put a lot of things in context for me. I love my bible.
Anyway, here's what Zeke 22:30 says.
"I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before ME for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one."
Here's what my bible notes say about this sentence.
The wall spoken of here is not made of stones, but of faithful people united in their efforts to resist evil. This wall was in disrepair because there was no one who could lead the people back to God. The feeble attempts to repair he gap - though religious rituals or messages based on opinion rather than God's will - were as worthless as whitewash, only covering over the real problems. What the people really needed was totaly spiritual reconstruction! When we give the appearance of loving God without living his way, we are covering up sins that eventually damage us beyond repair. Don't use religion as whitewash; repair your life by applying the principle of God's Word. Then you can join with others to stand "in the gap" and make a difference for God in the world.
This passage goes well with 1 Corinthians 16:13, it says...
"13 - Be on alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
14 - Let all that you do be done in love."
this is NASB.
But I bought this Shield with this passage on it, for my visor in my car, and I don't know what version it is but I like it better, it says
"Stand Firm
In The Faith
Be Men Of Courage
Be Strong"
These are the notes for 1 Cor. 16:13-14
As the Corinthians awaited Paul's next visit, they were directed to (1) be on alert against spiritual dangers, (2) stand firm in the faith, (3) behave courageously, (4) be strong, and (5) do everything with love. Today, as we wait for the return of Christ, we should follow the same directions.
