I apologize for the sentimental posts as of late, but that seems to be the way things are heading. As soon as one thing is taken care of, several other issues just pop up to take its place. Like as soon as I finished my thesis/exams, I got the job at Danby and started the following monday. As soon as I settle in to the job, we have to move out of the Longhouse. So forgive me if I'm a bit nostalgic or sentimental these days.
The job is fine, and sort of what I expected - random and kind of pointless labour. But it's a paycheck, and a reasonably good one at that! The people as well are quite good. The students that got hired with me are positive and funny and make the day go a little faster. Danby itself has formed its own set of linguistic patterns. After a week of working there, here are some of the terms that I've encountered:
Space Cadet
When the work one is doing is particularly boring, the tendency to "space out" is quite common. Therefore an individual spacing out on the job can be described as a space cadet.
Gravy Job
An easy or undemanding task.
Chirping
Getting "chirped" is a synonym for being verbally teased or reprimanded.
Hope Holes
Refers to the ceiling windows in the Danby warehouse that, when the light is right, shine angelic columns of light around the facility, thus giving workers "hope" for some abstract future freedom.
Cans
The containers of trucks in the shipping department. It is often required to hand-balm product from the container to the floor in order for a forklift to pick it up. Thus, working in the receiving area is often called "doing cans."
