G. “No, it doesn’t change the way that you feel. But then it also doesn’t change anything about what’s going on right now, either."
In relation to
this.
Mike left Butterfly on the couch and went into the bedroom. He closed the door behind him and got out his phone. He needed to talk to his mom and paced the whole time the phone rang.
“Mom?” He asked as soon as the other end picked up.
“Mikey. So nice to hear from you.”
“Good to talk to you too mom.” Mike sat down on the edge of the bed trying to relax.
“And how is that pretty young girl you’ve been staying with?”
Mike felt a lump in his chest when his mom asked. He stalled for a second before speaking. “That’s what I’m calling about.”
“Oh dear. Don’t tell me something dreadful has happened to her like the last one.”
“No... Well maybe.” Mike didn’t know if what had happened was bad or good.
“What’s happened Mikey?”
He sighed. “She’s pregnant.”
“Oh well that is news.”
“I don’t know what to do.” Mike was honest. His mom and brother were the only ones whom got that most of the time.
“Well are the two of you going to keep it?”
“She wants to.” Mike answered running his hand through his hair.
“And what about you darling?”
“I don’t know.” Mike didn’t. He felt like everything was out of control.
“Do you love this girl?”
Mike heard the question and froze up. That made the baby issue seem to be nothing at all. It was somewhere outside of him but this question had been causing him turmoil for a lot longer. “Sort of.”
“Sort of? What kind of answer is that?”
Mike went silent again listening to the apartment and his mother breathing on the other end. “Yes.”
“Then what’s the problem with the baby Mikey?”
“I don’t know. I’m not sure I want a family.” Mike couldn’t think of anything else to say.
“Why?”
“I’m too old.” That was an excuse.
“Nonsense.”
Mike could tell by the sound of her voice she didn’t believe him. He sighed. “I don’t think I’m ready.”
“People do not always get to plan for a family. You’ll come around.”
“What do I say to her?” Mike needed real advice. He hadn’t been in many relationships and certainly never one even close to this serious.
“The truth. That’s all a woman ever wants.”
“I don’t know if I can.” Mike admitted quietly.
“Give yourself time. You’ve had a big change in your life Mikey. Give it a few days. She’ll understand.”
“I hope so.” Mike added feeling at a loss for words.
“Remember that she’s probably as shocked as you are. Take her out and do something nice tomorrow. Relax.”
“Relax?” Mike laughed. “I’ll do that later.”
“I’m sure you will.”
“I should get back out there before she thinks I crawled out the window.” Mike stood up. “Thanks mom.”
“Any time Mikey.”
“Tell Bob I said hello if you see him before I do.” Mike added as he stretched a little.
“I will. Love you darling.”
“Love you too mom.” Mike replied before hanging up. Stuffing his phone in his pocket he headed back out to where Butterfly was. Things weren’t better but at least they seemed manageable.
