I was nervous about this finale for two reasons. First, I thought it might be sad. Second, in general, finales are hard to pull off. It's a show's (or book series', or movie series') last change to lay all the cards on the table and say "here's where the final point is, after everything." Everyone has different expectations (which may or may not

I really liked the episode! With a show like this it's SO HARD to stick the landing because by now we've come to expect that they never do what we expect but somehow it's always right. And it was.
I was kind of expecting them to go through the door together, but in hindsight it was much better that they each got their own send-off (or not!) because in the end they're all individuals who deserve their own ending to their own story.
I loved what they did with Jason. When he was the first to decide to go, I was kinda like "yeah sure of course they get rid of the 'useless' dumb character first, poor Jason". But then he had that great goodbye party, AND THEN HE CAME BACK, or rather turned out to have never left at all, AND SNEAKILY HAD HIS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AFTER DECIDING TO GO. And turned into Jianyu! Well, kinda, haha.
Tahani becoming an Architect is something I would never have seen coming in a million years (mostly because I didn't even realise that was an option, lol) but it's just so right for her. I really like that she had her good day with her parents and sister, and that she found something that was genuinely fulfilling for her. Also that she got Michael's peacock bowtie because yes, perfect.
ALSO NICK OFFERMAN WHAT, lol. Oh Mike Schur, you.
Chidi is the best and we don't deserve him. His wave in the ocean metafor was perfect and I definitely didn't have tears in my eyes, it was just very moist where I was. Ahem. I really liked that the guy who was indecisive for 4 seasons had made up his mind a while ago, and stepped through the door without hesitation.
And oh Eleanor. Even in the last episode she sneaked in some character development, when she realised she had to let Chidi go and resolve her own stuff first before going on herself. Eleanor was never really my favourite character (although I didn't dislike her either) but she was great here.
AND MICHAEL GOT TO BE HUMAN, YAY! With the best last name ever, haha. I do feel like Janet got the short end of the stick a bit, but like she said, as a not-girl she lives all timelines simultaneously so it's not like she's really-really left behind.
And as a concluding note: Marc Evan Jackson should be in more things. :p

Yes, exactly! I was the same, expecting it to be more of a collective decision. I also think this would have made it more of a sad ending than it was, you know? This way they truly got to have their resolution, rather than one individual deciding they must all go.

Yeah, that was right. Though I also loved that when Janet said "almost like a monk," Jason still didn't really get it. But in his way, I think he did. I think Jason was always smarter than he seemed.
I really like that she had her good day with her parents and sister, and that she found something that was genuinely fulfilling for her.
I also liked that her parents were genuinely remorseful, because they were painted as almost cartoonishly awful parents before, so it would've been easier for them to have basically stayed awful.

It also brought to mind when in season one, Eleanor realizes she's been holding Chidi back from enjoying "the good place" and gives him wine and a good book to enjoy on a boat in the water. Except there, Chidi doesn't really know how to row a boat and is panicked as Eleanor leaves. Here, he's calm and resolute.
Also, I finally got around to watching the special with Seth Meyers, and there's a clear (platonic) love between Kristen Bell and William Jackson Harper. So that was nice to see. (No wonder they had such great chemistry.)

Exactly. I was honestly expecting her to go through too, but I think she wanted to stay for Michael. I listened to the podcast with Marc Evan Jackson, and he explained that for Janet, the Michael goodbye was essentially sending her kid off to college, which explains why she was so much sadder compared to the others (even Jason).
