Rococo vs Caravaggisti

My first try at a contemplative 'lolita issues' post!

I don't want this to digress into a review of Kamikaze Girls, but something in that film really rubbed me the wrong way. Momoko wanted to be surrounded by only pretty things, so she avoided anything unpretty. Being that I've been volunteering regularly since I was 11 years old, I found this a bit offensive. I should clarify that I'm not taking an issue with the character or the book, but distressed by how lolitas write about, understanding, loving her and idolizing her, and then wanting to be surrounded by only pretty things. Why can't there be Caravaggisti Lolita, who embrace what's unpretty in the world? Why can't we take it a step further and try and make the real world, the whole world, prettier? Instead of escaping into some lame fantasy, why only try and make ourselves worthy of the clothes, but our environment as well?
