Tower of Terror, dir. D. J. MacHale, 1997.

Sometimes on late night tv, you'll get the occaisional groovy film. This is not really one of them, but it doesn't suck either. Made by Disney Studios, which belies the name of this made-for-tv flick.

"Tower of Terror" is another film based on a Disney theme park ride, as was "Pirates of the Carribean." Unlike PotC, this doesn't have the charm or wit or the excellent casting apart from Kirsten Dunst.

The plot revolves around a hotel, the Hollywood Tower, which has been haunted for 60 years. Steve Gutenberg, who plays a disillusioned tabloid reporter, is drawn into the story of five ghosts who have been trapped in time by a dark curse. He is recruited by a now elderly woman claiming to have witnessed a curse being put on a child star named Sally by her nanny. As the plot unfolds, we discover that the elderly woman is in fact Sally's sister and put the curse on her own sister out of jealousy, thinking everyone had forgotten her birthday - not realising that there was a surprise party being held in her honour.

Pacing is good, plot pretty mediocre (this is, after all, a theme park ride inspired film,) but overall inoffensive and generally brain candy late on a Saturday night when its too bloody warm to do anything else. Not worth paying money for certainly, but if its on late night and you're awake and have nothing else to watch or do, its not a bad way to pass the time.
