a translation of one of my fave parts (the article is beautifully written):
He had nothing less in mind than shooting the Australian pendant to "Gone with the Wind", Luhrmann says, who cultivates the look of Josef - von - Sternberg: Khaki trousers, white chemise, zippy bounded cravat, light Stetson. Only one man, who fell out of the time like the 46 - year old, can say such a megalomaniac sentence without blaming himself completely.

It barely is a coincidence that exactly Baz Luhrmann is Nicole Kidman´s favorite director. She also belongs to this long ago film era, where the stars still occupied the heaven and did not have to endear to the people (which nowadays makes allowances to their silver-screen heroes like staying "down-to-earth" or being "real").

At the beginning of her career she may just be a tall Australian girl with a snub nose and corkscrew curls in a red - tone, but neither racy nor elfish. One, who played in movies, which were okay, sometimes alongside her later husband Tom Cruise until Stanley Kubricks "Eyes Wide Shut"; at the latest there you could see, that Mrs. Cruise was a thousand times more exciting than Mr. Cruise, although her appearance was not as half as long as his.

A short time later she stopped being the tall woman next to the small Scientologist and re-invented herself completely. As a porcelain - like diva - not in the touchy, but in the old-fashioned way: One, who was a bit more perfect, more graceful than all the others, without seeming to be exerted. The Sydney - Girl turned into something between Grace Kelly and Greta Garbo. The challenging roles from "The Hours" to "Dogville" were for-free on top. But she wasn´t the very hot love of the audience: Silver Screen Goddess? Yes. Everybody´s Darling? No.

Now exactly "Australia" could contribute that this changes…
