We've got it and we've got it good

This year after Anthrohio rather than going to the Columbus Zoo or some roadside attraction or even Cedar Point we went to an historic site, and collected a letterbox with only a little confusion.

Side one of the marker explaining the incident. I did not remember anything about the Battle of Fallen Timbers from name alone, although I was guessing it had involved ``Mad'' Anthony Wayne. But it was a post-Revolutionary War baggle against the people who actually lived in Ohio.

The other side of the marker notes that for a long while the battle location was incorrectly identified, as the only specific guide anyone had to its location was one soldier's hand-drawn map that was misinterpreted.

Speaking of misinterpretations: this compass rose was a key element in the trail leading to the letterbox. We mis-read the instructions and thought the box was hidden inside the interpretative center which, it being a federal holiday, was closed.

There's a looping trail to walk around with the occasional plaque like this explaining aspects of the battle and what role it played in everything. The question ``Why Fight Here?'' catches me, though, as a ... yeah, of all the places in Ohio why here?

Further along the trail. This fallen tree is begging to be the location of a letterbox, or at least a waypoint on the path to a letterbox, but it's not! Yet! So far as I'm revealing to you!

bunny_hugger kneels down to get a nice dramatic view of the bridge here. Me, I'm not going to the pain of kneeling just for this bridge.

And here's a field they've decided needs trees in like ten years, so here we go.

Here's the plaque explaining some of the archeology that finally correctly sited the battle's location.

And then making our way back to the Interstate we discovered this historic site! An actual former Big K ... sign. The K Mart itself was long done, demolished to an abandoned parking lot.

Not sure why one side of the sign is so much better than the other but maybe it's something in the prevailing winds or something.

bunny_hugger strides out, looking to where it sure seems the Big K Mart must have been. Also into her album cover for this set of photos.

Or maybe this is her album cover, taking a picture of the Big K sign. I wanted to get her as close to the picture's edge as possible and that just came out right on.

Trivia: Lancashire, London, and Dundee all put forth claims to being the birthplace of fish-and-chip shops, dating claims to between 1864 and 1874. Source: Food in History, Reay Tannahill. It's possible research since Tannahill wrote (in the late 60s) has clarified matters but probably not. Tannahill notes that the history of hot-pie shops make fish-and-chip shops a natural development once fresh fish are available.

Currently Reading: Marvel Tales Featuring Rocket Raccoon, Bill Mantlo, Mike Mignola. Collecting the four-issue limited series from 1985 that put Rocket in the Marvel Comic Book Universe.
