Elementary School Shooting

Dec 15, 2012 20:49

This 20yo kid waltzed into an elementary school yesterday and shot almost an entire classroom worth of kids. I see my 2nd or 3rd grade class photo with all those shiny half-grown teeth poking out, and this kid just stole all of them. indiscriminately it would seem. all of this after shooting his own mother. They have no clue why he did this, yet. The president, and the media, immediately jump to gun control laws as the real problem. These guns are the problem. This couldn't have happened without the guns, and then they use some example of a crazy guy in china stabbing an entire classroom of kids, but they all survived, as if the guns are the reason the kids are dead, and not the fact that this guy shot kids. multiple times. All of them.

I'm sorry, but the issue is with society at large. This kid was a "normal" kid. Yet, he and his family have been described as "keeping to themselves". That is the real issue, the loss of community. When individuals feel outcasted, alone, and have no ties to the community, children's lives are of little importance. The value in youth, and the growth of the community falls flat when an individual feels betrayed, forgotten, or displaced from community.

With the advancement in technology, human beings have become more self sufficient then ever. We no longer need the community to survive. We no longer must interact and rely on other individuals to grow and thrive. While at the same time, emotionally, we need community more then ever.
