I started mentoring a first grader at school today and discovered that this kid has no idea about how to read, I mean, my mind was blown at how much this child struggled. My son is in kindergarten, so going in I thought I'll just do with this kid what I do with my son, we'll read a book, I'll read the hard words and have the child sound out the easy words, but no...holy crap no... that's not going to work.
I feel grossly underqualified to help this kid. But if the parents don't have the money to get the child proper tutoring who's going to spend time with her if not some volunteering do-gooding Mum? I've come to the conclusion that I'm better than nothing, but I don't think that's saying much.
What have I gotten myself into?
