Hmm. You have probably hit the nail on the head - Dean, we know what makes him tick, and where he is coming from. Sam, not so much.

I did like last week's episode though - what exactly did you not like about it (not sarcastic or rude, just curious - because I loved it).

This post comes to you courtesy of one bottle of Jacobs Creek Chardonnay and several Vodka Cruisers - so take it with a grain of salt or two!!

Oh no, I liked this one. lol. Did that not come through? I liked this ep, it was a vast improvement on the week before and I love it when the guys get into it.

But it just got me thinking about Sam's character because the writers have made some calls this season that are inconsistent with what came before. The deviousness for a start. Season 1 Sam was never devious. Neither was he insensitive like we're seeing now (and I think his insensitivity is directly related to how self absorbed he currently is).

So we have a changed Sam, and that's fine, I just want the writers to be consistent about it. Because I've revised my opinion of who Sam is based on what we've seen so far this season and I want to be able to follow his progress, I want to understand from hereon where he's coming from and why he reacts in certain ways.

Ooops, I wasn't totally clear - I meant episode 4.03 when I asked what you didn't like (the one where Dean went back in time).

Oh right. Hated 4.03. lol. And the more I think about it, the less I like it. I just found the whole thing unnecessary. And complicating. Mary was a hunter? That puts a completely different spin on everything. Her innocent death wasn't so innocent. And it doesn't sit well with how she has been portrayed so far.

I have no problem with her making a deal that led to Sam being infected with demon blood, but I would much rather it had been an innocent, desperate, naive act. I don't like the idea that she recklessly made that deal, and I don't like the idea that in the ten years before it came due she did nothing to try and avoid it.

Frankly, I just want to forget the whole thing. lol

You know, I never really thought about this. Sam is so inconsistent!! I generally consider him the straight man to Dean's funny, a kind, genuinely nice dude. He's obviously more complex than that and yeah, it's hard with his recent actions to break him down. Like, what are his most basic motivations? I have no idea. I really hope the writers do.

You're not thick! ;) And if you are, I must be too! XD

I'm considering season 4 a do over for Sam.

Whatever came before, whatever the writers were trying to achieve, I think the cataclysmic event of Dean dying and going to hell, leaving him alone, has, to an extent, wiped the slate clean, it has wrought change in Sam's personality. And I can totally buy however the writers go with that.

He's devious now? Well his brother went to hell for him, he's changed.

With that flexible argument I'm willing to reconcile any inconsistencies in his personality from hereon.

But the writers have to keep it consistent. He's devious now, they have made it so. He's been waiting for Dean to fall asleep and calling Ruby. Wow. Okay. Game on. This is Sam.

I just want to be able to recognise next weeks Sam from last weeks Sam, or three weeks ago Sam, that's what I've been missing. He was a lot simpler in season 1.

I think it's unhelpful as well that we don't have episodes equivalent to "Dream a little dream" and wiawnsb and even "in the beginning" for Sam, you know? Those reveal so much basic, basic characterization. Have we had any sort of 90% Sammy episode?

I agree, Sam is allowed to be different now. But yeah, there better be a baseline somewhere and it better be steady.

:)

You know, you're right. There really hasn't been an episode where we got to know Sam intimately. We've been thrown bits and pieces here and there from which to construct his inner workings but not with the same attention that Dean has received.

I think this season is going to be interesting. I think the writers have created some opportunities to make this season interesting. And from what I've seen so far, I am cautiously optimistic.
