Attention journalists!
In January in the UK, the sky sometimes shoots ice at people. This is an established fact, and no-one is very surprised. It is not newsworthy.
Right now, people are being raped and murdered, politicians are lying and philandering, brush conflicts are happening in troubled areas of the world, peace treaties are being drafted and signed, technological innovations are being unveiled, and in a myriad other ways, mankind's march towards its destiny proceeds. I would like to hear about the most significant of the events that make up this progress. I do not want to hear about the snow.
If the snow engages me - and be assured that it does - I will talk about it, with my fellow human beings who are also being snowed on. I do not require your assistance in being aware that it is snowing.
You may discuss snow if:
- Snowfall exceeds that typical of the UK by 500% or more (if it exceeds the average by 100-500% you may report on this on page 6).
- It snows between the 1st of June and the 31st of August.
- It snows in Australia.
Cold and treacherous conditions outside do not give you the excuse to conduct your investigations by looking out the window.
Many thanks. Please be about your business.
