Sat - Mon
Sunday. The Greece trip. Brekkie on the plane and after a while daylight. We could see some desert. Fantastic. Soo much sand. M had to call out Jeep Jeep even though there was none. Landed and it is already quite warm although only 7 in the morning. Time difference 6 hrs. to Sydney and the flight took 14 hrs. and 20 minutes. We are in Abu Dhabi and the airport is a bit like a Star Wars filming site. After whiling away at a café’ at the airport we left again, this time for Greece, Athens. The trip went well. Talked a bit to a guy who was born in Athens but had lived a long time in Geneva. He said only good things about Greece. He wished to go to Australia and could not think to eat Kangaroo meat. Took a taxi from the airport. Taxi driver had to answer some traffic questions from us and tried his best English. Our hotel is in a quite posh part of northern Athens. We checked in, changed clothes and took a walk. The stores around the hotel were type Manolo Blahnik shoes, TGI Friday’s, Pizza Hut and so on. Back to hotel on the back roads where all the trash cans were stinking. Saw a lot of Jeeps this day. We thought there would not be any here. Also a Range Rover with snorkel. Up to the room again and hung on the computer/iPhone before taking a nap. Plan was to sleep 2 hrs. and then get into the time zone. But we slept until 2 in the morning. M was up for a 15 min but went back to bed. At 4 we napped again until it was time to get up for real.
Monday. Slept until 7 something. Breakfast at the Hotel. Lots to choose from. Fantastic bread to die for! Asked the receptionist where the supermarket was. Walked to the AB supermarket. It was only 20 meters from where we stopped walking and turned around yesterday! Walked around and looked at the selection and prices, pretty much like a supermarket in Sweden. Very basic, no specialties except for maybe some big frozen octopuses.
Walked to the train station through a park. Some kind of a strike going on so the train only went half way to the city. We went of at Neratzitissa station next to the Mall of Athens. Almost only clothing stores and restaurants. We bought a road map of Greece, a book each for Linnea and Hanna and a USB connector for camera memory cards. Had Lunch at Ruby Tuesday. Then we stopped a taxi on the street outside the mall to take us to the Acropolis. It was very hot when we got there. We took slush drinks out side the entrance but we did not go in. We walked around the hill and looked at the view and took pics. Then we walked into the old parts of town around Acropolis. Very narrow, winding and beautiful alleys. Walked to Sindagma square. Lot of tents of protestors on it. We were very hot so we went to a place for cold drinks. Took a taxi back to the AB supermarket. Bought drinks and snacks, which we enjoyed on our balcony. A bit cooler at 7 pm. Will only have a sandwich at the hotel bar for eve meal.
