I am not a summery girl by any stretch of the imagination - I like coats, and scarves, and fingerless gloves, and tights, and leggings, and cardigans, and layers, and rainy days, and being able to cover up my tattoos for work without feeling overheated and gross. I do not like shorts, or bikinis, or the sun, or sunburn, or tank tops, or being a whore for air-conditioning, or never being able to wear my hair out because it is long and thick and wavy and not at all summer-friendly. SO, in order to combat my growing angst at the weather getting warmer, I’m on a mission to create my Ultimate Summer Playlist; songs that remind me of the good parts of summer (festivals, lazing, yummy summery cocktails, cute girls in short skirts, being able to wander around at 3am without feeling like a damn block of ice.) Creating said playlist is also excellent procrastination from the oh-hold-fuckballs-third-year-uni-is-a-massive-bitch hell. The work-in-progress stands at:
1. California Girls - The Beach Boys’
2. Stop! - Brendan Maclean
3. Stargaze - Xavier Rudd
4. The Door - Silverchair
5. Mexican Mavis - Boy & Bear
6. Walking Down The Street - Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs
7. Shake Your Tail Feather - Ray Charles
8. What A Great Night - Hilltop Hoods
9. Spanish Bombs - The Clash
10. The Loco Motion [Live] - Grand Funk Railroad
11. Blister In The Sun - Violent Femmes
12. The Summer - Josh Pyke
13. The Hardest Part - Washington
14. Year Of The Rat [Live] - The Whitlams
15. Berlin Chair - You Am I
16. I Don’t Really Mind - Tame Impala
17. Young Man, Old Man (You Ain’t Better Than The Rest) - The Dissociatives
18. Get Back - The Beatles
19. Lady Love [Live] - Robin Trowers
20. My Happiness - Powderfinger
21. Got The Feelin’ - 5ive
Apparently, 'summer tunes' in my world fall into three categories - songs from my childhood (#1, #6, #7, #9, #10, #18, #19, #21), songs that remind me of Sydney (#2, #14, #15, #16, #17) and songs which I have sung with hundreds of strangers at live gigs (#3, #4, #5, #8, #11, #12, #13, #20). Predictable, ain't it.
It’s not quite finished yet - there are a ridiculous number of artists and songs I want to add in, but for whatever reason they’re not on my iTunes yet. But I’m already slightly more excited about thirty degree days and endless sunshine.
Slightly.
