When it comes to 'lack-of-imagination' - I'm not sure anyone does better than us at naming their pets. This is kd (no, not killer dog ~ but katherine dawn) the dog, and bluey the bird. Lewie helped me *choose* kd from the shop on the 4th July, 1997. It was actually on the very same day that the Principal at ******* school asked me to "resign" because he had found-out I was gay. It amazes me how the laws have changed in these 8 short years. Now, here in W.A. if he did that to me, not only would it be against industrial law, but it would be against criminal law too. ~ but I digress ~
I brought the then Kelpie puppy home.... and jo said... "her name will be kd". I agreed whole heartedly of course - I mean it does sounds better than Ellen, or Melissa.... (for a dog of course). I remember later that night phoning my mum and telling her, "mum, I got a little girl pup!!" "Really??.. What have you called her?" she asked. "Jo has named her kd" I said laughing.... I will always remember my mum's response as the day I realised she had finally accepted I was gay... she started laughing and said "oh god no, as if you two need another lesbian living with you"
Really, my family has been pretty cool - as have jo's. The day my sister asked (I didn't offer.... she came and asked!) if Jo was my "lover", and I said "yes", she just looked at me and said, "Are you happy?". I wanted to cry... what a really great question. "yes, I really am" I said... she gave me a hug and said "Well, I can't possibly ask for any more". For having come from a truly dysfuntional family, I think Karen and I have done okay! *I'm proud of her*
