Can one fangirl Shakespeare??
My David Tennant Hamlet DVD is here!!!!!! So excited!!!!
But aside from watching it a thousand million times for the brilliance that is DT, this production reminded me again why I was such a Shakespeare nerd back in high school - why I demanded to be called Kate instead of Katie after seeing "Henry V" (We are the makers of manners, Kate. Therefore softly and yielding.). Why my parents took me to England for spring break my Junior year instead of someplace warm and sunny. Why I have quotes from his Sonnets written all over my HS notebooks (and even some of my music...) and why I had posters of Kenneth Branagh and not Brad Pitt on my walls in college.
There are not words to describe Shakespeare's genius. The melody and rhythm of his words. The universality of his thoughts. And just like Beethoven or Van Gough, whose works are so well know even to the point of parody or cliche, when Shakespeare's words are performed with such perfect care by the actors in this production...the text comes alive once more, each turn of phrase so brilliant as if being spoken for the first time.
