Creative Peterborough.... And other things.

I'm off to an event tonight called Creative Peterborough.

It's supposed to be a networking event to address the fact that there is nothing creative about Peterborough, but if you get all the creative people in Peterborough, in a room, then hopefully something might happen.

Well I think that's the theory.

We've always been Cambridge's shabby younger brother within our county. Peterborough is one of those places where your aspiration if you're any good, is to leave. All the young professionals seem to be here for a few years to get on the housing ladder or make some money and then get out again. (Like us for example.)

There's little to no alternative music culture apart from one club with sticky floors where all the emo kids go on a Friday night to try and pass for 18, and some metal nights, but nothing of note.

When walking around certain areas of London, around Liverpool, or certainly around Brighton, you can just FEEL that there is life and happiness bubbling around. In Peterborough it just feels like the people want nothing more than to shop in bland high street shops, go to Flares and Wetherspoons and spit out a couple of kids. There are very few independent businesses that sell anything other than mobile phones or acrylic nails.

They bring out lists sometimes of cities and towns where people go to University, and end up staying. Sheffield and Bristol are very high up there, and I think with a bit of support, Peterborough could be too. The new university is just starting to attract out of town students and I think the next 5 years that I'm here could be the turning point for the city.

I'm hoping tonight will be busy and I'll make some new friends and find something to get involved with... of course it may all be a load of bollocks as well, but there should be free orange juice if nothing else.
