There have been whispers and mumbles starting to slowly grow around here about wanting to organize some non-drinking, family-friendly related events for the PDX Goth-Industrial Scene. I'd love to get a group together to start organizing events, come up with ideas and help get this stuff up and going. The revival of Goth Skate has been discussed as well as a number of other ideas.
I think most of us with kids don't have enough time and energy to organize an event on our own. But, maybe if we pool our resources we can actually make things happen. I've been waffling on when to start putting out feelers for interested parties. I'm going back to school this fall. So, I expect that I will be busier than ever. But, the interest is there and I'd like to think that if we get a critical mass of energy and people involved that we can pull this off. What do you think? Do you have ideas to contribute even if you don't have the energy to help organize?
Various ideas already mentioned....
- Afternoon Tea
- Goth Skate (orig.
gidget23's event)
- PDX Goth Naval Battle (
katlyn's idea based on a SF Bay Area Event .... This will have to wait til next summer.)
- Laser Tag
- Picnics
- Cooking Parties (inspired by multiple discussions I've had with
synthcat)
- Maybe some camp-outs / day trips?
- Family-Friendly Drum Circle (not necessarily PDX PIG event, based on a monthly group that one of my crunchy granola mom friends did last year)
The only criteria are these:
- PDX metro area or an easy day trip from here
- Focus not on drinking or clubbing. We have enough of these fine events around town.
- Non-smoking / outdoor venue for those of us with kids or allergies
- Daytime / early evening events for those of us who need to adhere to school-time bedtimes for the kiddies or have to work early the next day
- Preferably not competing with other regularly scheduled events around town for those of us that like to do both
I'd like to design events that are all-inclusive, open and inviting to people of all age groups regardless of whether or not they have kids to bring along. I hate the divide that often exists between kid-friendly events and adult-friendly events. How about we just get together and invite everyone!?! :)
Who do you know who might be interested in getting involved or who might simply be interested in attending?
I know that Sean T
pdx42 has already expressed interest as we've had multiple discussions on the topic. I'd imagine that Chris Christian
ferretninja will also be on board. Who else? Once we start to get a core group going we can start to organize, ask for volunteers, post on the PDX PIG list, etc.
