No matter how hard I try

Sunday was my parents' 24th anniversary so we went down to Kirby to get her some jewelry. I picked out a necklace, some earrings, and a pair of bangles and we took them home. We got Anoop from his MCAT class and waited for Amma - who didn't come until 11:00 PM. It turns out that she didn't want the jewelry - she wouldn't accept it because "it wasn't her style" or "I don't wear such things" and I was kind of awestruck. When someone gives you a present or a gift, you're supposed to at least be somewhat grateful. I don't know what's wrong with her. She also doesn't want us to do anything for her 25th anniversary because she feels awkward there. What else are we supposed to do as kids? She's done this for the past few holidays. On her birthday, she wouldn't let us buy anything. On Mother's Day, I found her a cake and she wouldn't eat it. And now on her anniversary, she won't take jewelry that we picked out for her. At least Appa actually uses his presents - then again, we just get him tools, shirts, or garden things.
