Public Call letter

Oct 16, 2018 18:43

Hello, dear writer! I couldn’t fit everything in my sign-up, so I’m posting all the request-specific stuff in the letter here. My general likes and Do Not Wants are in the request, but I’m putting them in the beginning of the letter just in case. Skip them if you’ve got them already. This is obscenely long, because that’s apparently the only way I know to write exchange letters. Don’t let it scare you. I adore all the characters and relationships I requested, so I’ll be pretty happy with anything in character as long as it steers clear of my Do Not Wants.

Though I throw a lot of specific prompts at you later, you can feel free to ignore them, or change them in any way that doesn’t cause problems with my Do Not Wants. I just like having lots of prompts in my requests/letters because I’m myself the kind of writer who works better with prompts, even if I don’t always follow them to the letter, and it maybe gives you an idea of what I particularly like. But if they don’t work for you, don’t feel any pressure at all to use any of them!

Requested relationships (as in the sign-up, ie "/" doesn't need to mean a shippy fic)

Classic Who (Second Doctor era):

Second Doctor/Ben Jackson/Jamie McCrimmon/Polly Wright,
Second Doctor/Jamie McCrimmon,
Second Doctor/Jamie McCrimmon/Victoria Waterfield,
Second Doctor/Zoe Heriot/Jamie McCrimmon,
Zoe Heriot/Isobel Watkins,
Zoe Heriot/Jamie McCrimmon,
Zoe Heriot/Victoria Waterfield

New Who:

Jack Harkness/Martha Jones,
Martha Jones/Rose Tyler,
Heather (Doctor Who: The Pilot)/Bill Potts,
Martha Jones/Bill Potts

General likes:

- Adventures
- Historical settings
- Space
- Alien cultures, strange planets, human space settlers in far future
- Aliens who aren't evil
- Earth settings somewhere else than Britain or other English-speaking countries.
- Daily slices of life
- Emotions and relationship stuff, inner workings of TARDIS teams
- Time travel shenanigans
- TARDIS related things: the TARDIS not working as she should, exploring the insides of the TARDIS, fixing her
- Humour
- Mild to moderate angst with a happy/comforting/hopeful ending
- Hurt/comfort (leaning rather towards the comfort than the hurt)
- Friendship and found/chosen family; intense feelings about friends
- Touching, hugging, clinging, physical comfort, whether platonic or not
- Friends to lovers scenarios
- Banter
- Canon divergence AUs (what if…)
- Missing scenes
- Past fic, pre-canon
- Future fic
- Relationship-wise, I’m happy with anything from the most general-audiences handholding and loving looks to full-out porn, and anything in between. But even in stories with lots of sex, I don’t want the story to be just about the sex, but especially about the characters and their relationship.

General dislikes and Do Not Wants

- Gore, descriptive violence, permanent character death, torture.
- Horror (beyond mild gothic horror)
- Domestic abuse or abusive relationships, especially between the requested characters or any canon pairing they are/have been in.
- Non-con, underage sex (under 16), characters being uncomfortable with the sex they’re having, including characters agreeing to a kink they don’t like because they’re afraid of the other’s reaction
- Character bashing
- A/B/O scenarios
- Wildly different AUs of the coffee shop / high school / college / werewolf / vampire / pirates / etc. variety. Canon divergence is fine.
- Porn focusing heavily on a specific kink. Don’t want to see the following kinks at all: watersports, scat, mpreg, bloodplay, breathplay, ageplay, animal play.

The more specific stuff that didn’t fit in the sign-up

As the rules of the exchange say, you can write any of the requests as gen or shippy. I do have a few notes about where I particularly ship or where I prefer gen, though:
- I ship Two/Jamie madly. However, I’m also perfectly happy with gen depictions of their relationship, because they bounce off each other so delightfully regardless, and their friendship and companionship is a thing of beauty. Canon level clinging always appreciated!
- Two/Jamie is, on the other hand, the only Second Doctor ship that works for me. I feel uncomfortable about the idea of pairing him up with any of his other companions. Also, Jamie/Zoe as a pairing doesn’t work for me, I see it as such a sibling-like relationship, but I adore exploring their dynamic in gen fics. Pairing up Jamie with any other Two-era companions is free game, though, including any moresomes (say, Ben/Polly/Jamie or Jamie happily having a relationship with both Two and someone else, as long as everyone involved agrees it’s okay).
- I adore femslash and I adore female friendships and other cases of women interacting with each other platonically. So in any of the relationships featuring two female characters, both Classic Who and New Who, I’ll be super happy with either. Well, with Bill/Heather I prefer pairing fic, since they get together in canon, but pre-relationship is also fine with them.
- And just for completeness, I also like Jack/Martha both as shippy and gen. I just want more of them together because I love them both, and there isn’t enough fic about them specifically.
- Also, feel free to combine requested relationships so that even more of these characters interact with one another (say, Zoe and Victoria interacting with the Two and Jamie as well, Zoe and Isobel poking fun on Jamie, Martha and Bill and Rose all teaming up to hunt baddies or have hot sex or whatever they like).
- I’m always all for fixing what happens to Jamie and Zoe at the end of War Games, whether via Season 6B (which I firmly believe in and they can never take it away from me) or something else. I’d also be happy about fixing Bill’s ending so that she doesn’t end up cyberized at the end of S10 but either ends up with Heather some other way, or has a different ending entirely.

As for canon familiarity: I’ve watched all of New Who. I like all New Who Doctors, the favourite being Thirteen (OMG!!!) and late Twelve; so though none of the New Who relationships I requested include the Doctor, feel free to include him/her in any incarnation if your story could use it.

I found Classic Who via Twitch this summer, fell madly in love with the Second Doctor era specifically, and after I got a nice sampler of all the Classic eras via the marathon, I dove into seeing everything I can from the Second Doctor era. (I haven't seen all of the Zoe stories yet, my proper watch-through of the era being currently up to Web of Fear, but by December I'll probably have seen most if not all of the Zoe stories as well. When it comes to missing stories, I've watched the stuff on the Lost in Time DVDs and I'll slowly start making my way through other material, but it'll take a while.) I like almost all the other Classic characters and eras, too, but my knowledge of them is so far haphazard, depending on which episodes were on at a convenient time, and I don't expect to get to properly watching non-Two era before 2019.

More specific prompts, which you can use or not use, whichever you prefer.

Classic Who / Second Doctor era relationships

- Zoe being scientific and awesome
- Jamie saving the day
- Victoria saving the day
- In Two’s era, we had lots of companions from different time periods and cultures, and I’d love any exploration of that. Culture clashes, trying out each other’s foods or clothes or anything, introducing Jamie and/or Victoria to modern technology or how culture and mores have changed since their time, Zoe coping with what she sees as backward times or trying to explain things about her time to people from the past, or how the Doctor explained to Jamie that the Moon is a place you can visit.
- Visiting eras where the historical companions are in their home turf and know their way around.
- Anything where the Doctor appreciates his companion(s) and relies on them, where they work in a team. The Doctor needing his companions.
- Found family vibes, companionship and friendship among the characters.
- Zoe and the TARDIS library
- Exploring how the companions reacted to some of the pretty unsettling or traumatic stuff they experienced during the story. 60s TV writing may not have been much about character arcs, but doesn’t mean it didn’t happen between the scenes!
- How did Victoria’s concept of what women could do get influenced by seeing different times, and meeting women like Astrid Ferrier and Anne Travers? How did she come around to wearing miniskirts after being used to crinolines?
- AU where Isobel comes along as a companion. How does she fit into the team? How much do she and Zoe heckle Jamie? What happens when she travels to the 21st century and discovers digital cameras?
- Isobel and Zoe during the Invasion: Gen prompts: Zoe trying to get to know Isobel’s time period, any fun friendship moments or little adventures or reacting to the canon adventure. Shippy: things getting heated during the photography. Or cute romancing and Zoe being unsure what the customs are in this age and Jamie and the Doctor being no help whatsoever. Isobel managing to time-travel later and find Zoe, or Zoe meeting her again in later travels.
- A new companion settling into the life aboard the TARDIS and finding their place in the team and companionship with the others. Works for any of the companions who arrived during the Second Doctor era.

New Who era relationships, sorting the prompts by relationship:

- Jack and Martha connecting either over the Year That Never Was stuff, or the stuff that they go through later. Martha’s times at Torchwood. How would they interact much farther in the future? Going on adventures together (with or without the Doctor) and being a good, competent team.

- Martha and Rose NOT being jealous over the Doctor but instead discovering they make a darn good team. Maybe Rose stayed in the regular universe or she returned there later. Maybe we get alternate Martha in Pete’s world. Maybe they become an awesome adventuring duo or just friends who swap time-travel stories and have fun. Maybe they fall in love with each other and have hot snogging and snuggling.

- Giving Bill and Heather some actual time to get to know each other before they sail off to the stars, e.g. by extending their relationship during Pilot or going AU and having Heather be around more during S10. Show some of their life after the canon ending. Fix the canon ending and give them an alternate way to get together.

- How would Bill and Martha meet? During their respective adventures with their respective Doctors, with timelines intersecting and possibly causing havoc? In their proper timelines, with Martha older than she is in canon? Maybe Twelve needs her assistance in something or just goes to visit an old friend with Bill in tow. Maybe post-canon Martha will help Bill at getting over some of the bad stuff she’s experienced. Maybe they adventure together in places where pale-skinned people would be looked at weirdly but they fit right in. Maybe they swap stories about the weirdness of time travel and the Doctor. Maybe they have a sweeping romance and/or hot snuggles. You decide!
