I Do Not Love
I do not love John Watson for all that loving him would mean. I simply cannot.
For John is slow, and for him I would have to wait, shorten my stride, pause to explain, just to see my own spark in his eyes. And if I have to stop, take the time, I may just forget for a moment the gnawing impatience of the puzzle. I'd have to wait, be sure he's with me, following like a shadow of light, like a halo.
And John has an appreciation for useless things like telly and walks in the park. If I loved John Watson, I would have to stop, try to see as he does, try to understand why these things matter to him, imagine those smiles and sighs were from my own mouth.
I would have to try to understand nonsense like why when, after he's been gone all day, upon his return, the flat comes alive with a new atmosphere, like in the winter when you absently leave a Satsuma on the windowsill in the sun, and your forgetfulness is rewarded with the heady fragrance of summer. And I would need to find out why, when he's close, I feel off balance, and my pulse pounds with the thrum thrum of a clothes dryer, off kilter with one sodden blanket.
