Redemption in Scotland: A Book Review on Mine Is the Night

May 03, 2011 13:29

When I saw that Mine Is the Night was one of the choices for being reviewed, I jumped at the chance to get this book! After all, who can resist a sweet romance set in the Highlands of Scotland? And what makes this story all the more beautiful is that it is a retelling of the story of Ruth.

Since I was a little girl, Ruth has been one of my favorite people in the Bible, and her story is a most beautiful one. Liz Curtis Higgs really captured the beauty of the story without compromising anything from the original story. Elizabeth was really Ruth, and Lord Jack was really Boaz. Even Marjory (Naomi) and Lord Mark Kerr (the other kinsman) were very believable in their roles. It was as if the actual Biblical characters had come to life in 18th century Scotland.

Before I started this series, I had read the author's series on Jacob and his wives and family. While she did an excellent job especially the historical aspect, I did not enjoy that series, given the nature of the original stories. So when I read both Here Burns My Candle and Mine Is the Night, I was pleasantly surprised.

This book was not only a beautiful story but also a story that has depth. The author really delved into the feelings and emotions of the characters, something that is not usually well done in other novels set in Scotland (since they mostly focus on the romance and nothing much else). They were very realistic, each having their flaws; yet in the end, they were transformed into better people.

The historical accuracy in this book pleased me to no end, being a lover of history. I felt that she really captured the dialect and the culture of the people. I feel like I was really in Jacobite Scotland!

So for those who are lovers of novels set in bonnie Scotland or for those who are lovers of history or even for those who just love a good love story, Mine Is the Night (and Here Burns My Candle) is definitely for you!

I received this book  from Blogging for Books for free in exchange for reviewing it.
