I love 80's movies (and you should too)

If you’re following me on twitter then you know I’m a fan of movies/tv/pop culture of the 1980’s and early 1990’s.  I love all the bad clothes, bad hair, cheesy music and excellent slang.  Sadly there are a few of you on the flist who were just wee little babies during this epic decade.  I am tired of hearing “I was only 3 when that came out”, “I ( Read more... )

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ZOMG YAY! JOHN HUGHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so excited for this post!

"For the shipper in me, Watts and Keith are the closest 80’s versions of Kara and Lee and that just makes me happy."

YES THEY ARE. WATTS COULD BE KARA THRACE'S MOM! SHE REALLY COULD! AND KEITH HAS DADDY ISSUES! AND THEY'RE SO <3 <3 <3 <3

AND LOOK AT THEIR SMOKING CHEMISTRY HERE:

Gah and their banter is sooo fantastic. My favorite quote might be "I'd bet my hands on it!" SO ANGSTY! Or maybe "Ever seen a girl with a drumstick shoved up her nose?" SO TOUGH ( ... )

My favorite part of Pretty in Pink is the dress. And Annie Potts because I knew someone very much like her when I was in HS. I actually forgot to comment on PiP below. I like it better than Sixteen Candles but it was so ubiquitous for so long that it lost meaning for me. Hrm.

I have to admit I thought the dress was the most hideous thing ever. Even for 80s fashion. It had awful polka dots and cut out sleeves and it didn't even fit her well! I remember seeing it at the end and going...but...why did she make that very pretty pink dress into...THAT?!

LOL. Annie Potts was fun though.

Oh, but it's so 80's whack-ass fashion (which I was very, very into), and I loved that she made it.

I love the cheesy 80's fashion so much. It's hilarious. My sister and her friends (who are 6 yrs older than me) used to dress up like Madonna with the lace gloves and socks with heels. Blue eye shadow. GOOD TIMES.

Andie's dress was hidious (the cut...I was like what?) but the fact she made it from Iona's dress and the dress her dad gave her. Awesome!

Like many things, dress was better in theory than execution. ;)

<3 <3 <3 YOUR ICON. SO PERFECT! <3 <3 <3

Oh absolutely! You sign me up and I will bring the movies! Whatever you like! My favorites: The Cutting Edge (duh), Heathers (like whoa!), Goonies (of course), Sing (Natch!), Girls Just Want to Have Fun (Whee!). Fame, Footloose, Clue, Lucas, soooo many.

There are a lot of others that I used to love but haven't seen in so long: Three for the Road and Listen to Me, as we talked about. Maybe we should have one post for forgotten/never-known gems, and it can include those two and Sing, and Shag isn't that well known... I'm sure there's others.

YES, the leg and hand clinch just gets you! SOOO good!

I totally shouted out at the end of Smutstrav to her line about the earrings when she says she didn't know she was getting them, but she really really wanted them. Pretty sure I used the "I watch a lot of TV" line somewhere too.

I liked Duckie, but....NOT IN THAT WAY. You know. ;)

Hi, so I realise this was a while ago, but taragel sent me over here after I was all like SOMEKINDOFWONDERFULOHMYGOD and then I read your post and it was all John Hughesy and I got all excited, and then I read this :

You know what gets me during the kiss? The way her leg hitches up and his hands clench. MY GOOD GODS.

THIS!! SO VERY MUCH!! Like every time I watch that scene my heart actually flutters a little bit, the way his fists just, ugh, and then it's too much and she's blushing and I seriously seriously do not think there is a better scene than this in any Hughes movie.

But I don't mention it to people because then they're like, you are kind of really strange, it's just a kiss, and I'm all ITS NOT JUST A KISS and then I have to try and be chill and it's just not pretty.

So basically, yeah, I'm glad you guys exist. It's like I've found my people!

Sorry for the ranting...

yay! I love that watching them takes me back to being a kid and loving all the cheesy romance. Makes me smile and forget about real life sometimes.
