CHARACTER NAME: Nymphadora Tonks-Lupin.

DOB: December 16, 1973

HOUSE/YEARS: Hufflepuff, 1984-1991

BLOODLINE: Half-blood. Tonks’ mother is a pureblood witch, her father a muggleborn wizard.

POLITICAL AFFILIATION: Tonks sides with the Order of the Phoenix.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Being a metamorphmagus, Tonks can look like anyone. However, her “default” appearance is somewhat petite, with a round, heart-shaped face, hazel eyes and short, spiky hair that can be any color of the rainbow, though she tends to prefer bubblegum pink. She’s pretty average looking aside from the brightly colored hair, though she packs a lot of punch in a fight, being a trained Auror.

PERSONALITY: The first impression one usually gets with Tonks is that she’s energetic, outgoing and generally fun to be around. This bears itself out with further acquaintance. Tonks is fundamentally optimistic and hopeful, she has strong ideals and an even stronger moral compass that she lives by. She is unendingly loyal to those she loves - she will forgive them just about anything, almost to a fault. She’s a hard worker, and once she sets her mind to something, it’ll get done to the best of her ability.

On the down side, Tonks tends to be spontaneous, a little bit thoughtless, and occasionally impatient. Her highs are quite high and her lows are correspondingly low. When she’s having a hard time, she is just as unable to hide it as she is unable to hide her good moods. It doesn’t happen often, but when she hits bottom, she hits it hard and it may adversely affect her ability to function.

Tonks is somewhat scatterbrained, and while she’s pretty endlessly curious, if she isn’t interested in something it can be difficult for her to stay motivated. Her marks at Hogwarts were generally very high, but only in those subjects she needed to get into Auror training. She failed Astronomy completely, not having any interest in the movements of the stars and planets, for instance.

HOBBIES/HABITS/IDIOSYNCRASIES: The first idiosyncrasy one notices about Tonks is that she’s clumsy. Living in a body that can change its dimensions (and does, frequently) has made her a danger to breakable knick-knacks and she’s constantly running into things, knocking things (or people) over, and having to cast a quick reparo on broken items.

She doesn’t have too many hobbies, except perhaps reading trashy Muggle romance novels, the worse the better. She’s a bit addicted to bad purple prose and finds it hilariously funny. She’s naturally curious about pretty much everything, but she’s not particularly studious by nature, being much more inclined to go outside and hike in the woods or play Quidditch with friends than spend her time in the library with a stack of books.

FAMILY BACKGROUND/PERSONAL HISTORY: Tonks’ mother, Andromeda, was born to the Black family, one of the oldest and most respected pureblood families in the wizarding world. Andromeda, as a Black, was expected to marry someone from one of the other pureblood families, but at Hogwarts she met and fell in love with Ted Tonks, a Muggleborn wizard, and when they eloped Andromeda was disowned.

But disowned or not, Andromeda was still a Black, and as such her daughter, Nymphadora, grew up with a strange mix of her father’s Muggle background and her mother’s pureblood traditions. Tonks was born in the middle of the first war against Voldemort, and as such knew from an early age of family and friends who were killed, or their lives destroyed by Voldemort and his followers. Tonks, for as long as she could remember, wanted to be able to fight against such evil and by the time she started at Hogwarts already knew she wanted to be an Auror.

Tonks was sorted into Hufflepuff, loyal and hardworking, and worked hard to meet her goal of getting into Auror training. But there was plenty of time for fun, too, and Tonks made full use of it, getting herself into trouble on several occasions. It was because of this that Tonks was never made a Prefect, despite her high marks. She would’ve gotten into trouble even more often if it hadn’t been for her friend, Charlie Weasley, in the same year but a Gryffindor, who was a Prefect and got her out of a lot of trouble. Charlie was also her first boyfriend.

After Hogwarts, Tonks went straight into Auror training, and threw herself into it with gusto. She had little time for a personal life but managed to be popular with the other trainees despite this. She became an Auror in 1994, and a year or so later she was recruited by Albus Dumbledore for the Order of the Phoenix.

There, Tonks became reacquainted with Sirius Black, her cousin, and his friend Remus Lupin. Tonks and Remus became fast friends, spending long hours in the kitchen of Number 12, Grimmauld Place drinking tea and talking about everything under the sun, occasionally accompanied by Sirius. When Sirius died in the spring of 1996, however, the relationship between Tonks and Remus changed; Remus began pulling away from her and Tonks became more and more aware that she was falling in love. After a one-night stand in the summer of 1996, Remus left for a mission in eastern Europe and Tonks went into a downward spiral which culminated in the loss of her metamorphmagus abilities.

By spring, 1997, Remus’ mission was over and he admitted his feelings for Tonks. They got married that summer, despite Remus’ reservations, and when Tonks discovered she was pregnant, Remus bolted again, though this time he returned after only a couple of weeks.

Teddy Remus Lupin was born in April 1998, and in June 1998 Remus and Tonks were killed in the Battle of Hogwarts.*

((*Note: I feel free to amend this when writing Tonks, assuming instead that she and Remus survived the final battle. This is really only relevant in first-person entries, however, as most of my ficlets are set during the timeline of DH. I'll mark anything that is obviously AU as such.))
