last night and today

Aug 16, 2008 16:58

I had the best night last night. I don't think I've laughed that much in ages! Four friends from work took me out for a farewell dinner (I have a week to go but it was the best and only night we could go out). We went to this nice restaurant on Queen Street I've been to a few times before, called East Asia Food Flair - part of the Spring Rolls ( Read more... )

I've seen that book around but didn't know what it was about or if it was any good. Thanks for the rec, I'm putting that one on the list!

Hehe, I think you have most of my book recommendations already, more or less. Umm, off the top of my head, the last few books I read and got excited over were Kelley Armstrong's The Summoning (dark fantasy YA), Joanna Bourne's My Lord and Spymaster (historical romance), and Ann Aguirre's Grimspace (sf; the sequel, Wanderlust is coming out at the end of September).

I've already bought The Summoning and Grimspace. Can't remember anything about My Lord and Spymaster; did you review that recently?

Edit: I went back and found the review - I remember that cover! I read your humorous cover analysis but I didn't read the review because the cover put me off! I should know better with these kinds of books, they always have horrible covers.

This one's going on the list! Thanks!

Where to start...I know so many..ok lets just throw out some suggestions

Sex with the king by Eleanor Herman:Everything you didnt wish you want to know about the glamourous courtesans and mistresses.Covers Madame Pompadour to Camilla Parker Bowles(and some interesting ones you never heard of)

A most dangerous woman by L.M Jackson:victorian female sleuth has to solve death of friend from her shady past.Keeps you guessing to the end.

The oracle glass by Judith Merkle Riley:Crippled girl becomes immortal fortune teller in 1680s France.A bit of romance thrown in.Gripping.

The power of three by Diana Wynne Jones:a YA fantasy about the war between two magical races in the UK.And a young boy trying to end the curse that started the war.

Forced Mate by Rowena Cherry:Sci-fi romance about a race of
Somewhat of a Beauty&Beast story. Not as cheesy as it sounds. In fact the better one of the genre out there.Even if the covers scream trashy romance, and it does involve plenty of sex.

Thanks for thee, I haven't heard of any of them! Why haven't I heard of these? Forced Mate sounds great! Always like to have a bit of "trash" around to lighten things up ;)

I haven't heard of that chess term - not that I'm a great chess player mind you, but I at least know of castling!

The list is getting longer - this is great!

Ooer, sounds fun, that!
I don't know many of the shops - only HMV and Chapters (because you told me about it before), so the rest are straight over my head : ) It sounds like you got a load of ace new stuff though. Is Gap good or bad?

And uni is the perfect excuse for new clothes! I've been on the hunt for a good jacket because it's freezing here, but being Brisbane they had barely anything for winter and are now moving straight into spring/ summer. Don't they know August is cold here?!
And the shoe hunt... grr. I was lucky this year though, I finally found a nice pair of boots. But now of course I need new summery shoes (my thongs are falling apart. How terrible!).

Probably not your usual but I'll throw them out there -
The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists by Gideon Defoe is hilarious and silly.
The Red Tree - because I'll just keep telling you how good it is.

I found out after writing that that Lululemon is a Canadian company and the clothes are made in Vancouver, which is great, but they do have stores in Australia including one in Brisbane at the Brisbane Showroom - does that mean anything to you? They're very popular here. Here's the website: http://www.lululemon.com/

I'm sure you've heard of Gap! They're worldwide and all that. People make lots of jokes because they're so yuppy and they have "Baby Gap" which is a whole lot of expensive clothes for your baby who couldn't give a shit, so it's all about the parents posing. But they do have nice jeans.

Oh I hate it how they bring in clothes for the next season so early, so you can't find say a winter jacket because all the shops are stocked with t-shirts even though it's like 5 degrees and the last thing you want to wear is a t-shirt!

I haven't heard of the Pirate book, is it fiction? I thought at first that you said The Red Tent instead of "tree"! It doesn't sound familiar either ( ... )

Not a clue where the Brisbane Showroom is - I do a bad job for someone who lives here. They look nice - sort of like Lorna Jane but without all the branding everywhere.

Gap doesn't ring any bells ... Yuppy is okay, though! Especially when you can find things that actually fit! Oh no, I just looked up Gap. I'll probably be there for an hour now :D

Pirates is a very silly fiction book about some pirates who meet Charles Darwin when they try to plunder his boat - they end up taking him, his assistant, and Mister Bobo the clever monkey back to London. (I love silly pirate books!)
The Red Tree is the Shaun Tan book I was going on about - the children's one with gorgeous illustrations. Clicky clicky?

I'm sorry, I'm not always good at remembering things. But I'm putting The Red Tree on the list!

I hate the idea that you can tell about someone by where they shop for clothes, but it's kinda true isn't it? ;)

Sounds lovely dear! So glad you made some good friends at work. Reminds me of Tara in Paris, it was the ex-pats that were the ones worth knowing!

Have you ever read 'The Power of One' by Bryce Courtenay. There's a bit of boxing in there but isn't overdone and the storyline always moves along nicely. I'm halfway through 'Tandia', the second novel. It's a bit awful at first but if you can get past that then it's a good read too.

Did you ever read one of my favourite books 'I heard the owl call my name'? If not then I highly recommend it.

*hugs* Fer.

I'd like to read The Power of One but the publisher that does the Canadian editions doesn't do a very good job and the pages are always crinkly and look like they're going to fall out. So I think I'll have to wait on that one till I get back :)

I haven't heard of I Heard the Owl Call My Name - who's it by?

It's by Margaret Craven -

Set in British Columbia. I read it back in high school so it's been around for a while now!
