Oz doesn't really show any inclination to want to go outside. He suns himself in front of the sliding glass door but that's it. In fact, we've left the door open to get in groceries etc..., and he just sits in front of the door, no mad dashes or anything.
In any case, the reason Nana had Oz declawed is her health; she had an auto-immune disease, and so was on immune supressants. After a battle with a really nasty infection, her doctor told her she needed to either get rid of Oz or have him declawed, because cats carry all kinds of germs in their claws that can be transmitted to humans. Toby would have been declawed too, eventually, but unfortunately she didn't live long enough after getting him for that to happen.
Oz wouldn't rule the neighborhood, poor baby. Our neighbor's cat once broke into our house in order to attack Oz. We had the windows open because the weather was so nice, and Tigger clawed a hole in the screen and bloodied him up a bit. Oz was never the same after; that was the start of him acting all neurotic (can't say I blame him) and hiding from everyone.
I have to say, that's the best reason I've ever heard for declawing a cat (something I've always considered cruel and unnecessary - a general attitude back home really), and I tell you what, I'm sometimes tempted to have it done to Gaia, she can't retract them for some stupid Gaia reason and actually gets them stuck in the carpet. Not to metion clawing the door and rug etc. She's gouged a few scratches into Adam's legs too.
Even so I felt horrible when I dropped Oz off at the vet. They even went ahead and took off his back claws too, just to be safe. Although it was amusing to see him try to jump on the couch and just slide back down. He adjusted pretty quickly, in fact sometimes I wonder if he's even aware they're gone, because he still tries to scratch things, (furniture and such), and sometimes I go into fits of giggles when he scratches himself. "How's that working for ya? Feels nice, does it?" Okay that was mean.
I think I'd find a crazy cat lady and leave Gaia with her. Poor silly thing. And it's no good trimming their claws; for one it's a pain to do because they fight you the whole time, and for another they grow back in a matter of days. And isn't she the one who gets dags? -_-
Ooh yeah, she gets dags alright. I won't be telling that to the person interested in taking her in! We have nail trimmers but you're right, they grow back so fast and she still gets caught on the carpet. Why can't she retract her claws? Umph.
I can so picture Oz sliding off furniture and trying to scratch himself! But cats do adjust pretty quick don't they.
