voting woes & July books

So, bummer, complete bummer, I found out I'm not enrolled to vote anymore and it's too late to enrol. I had to call the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission - did I get that right?) the other day because I tried searching for my enrolment on their website but got nothing - it's like being told you don't exist! I'm really annoyed with myself. ( Read more... )

Ha ha yeah I've noticed that! I can also hear Americans - and Canadians, based on how they got red light cameras taken away - whine about it infringing on their "rights". People use that word as an easy excuse for not doing something they should, without really understanding it. I was shocked to hear that they used to have red light cameras here until people complained that it infringed on their rights! What kind of argument is that?! It ISN'T one!

And honestly, people think the government is watching them, spying on them - I work in government, and the idea is laughable. They need to collect data so they can know where to spend money (there's a lot of fuss here lately about the conservative government scrapping the mandatory long form in the census - without it, no one can get reliable data about the most at-risk and needy communities) but they honestly have way too much to do and not enough money to do it with to SPY on us! And to what point? We're not the enemy! Maybe things are different in the States but it's like they want to live in an action movie or something. It's not realistic.

Okay, ranting ;)

I haven't read past the first book in that series - I liked it but I didn't feel like I really wanted to keep reading. It was such a nice story; I was happy to leave it at that. Too many other books to read!

It's those same bozos who say crap like ''What happened to freedom of speech'' When they say something dumb or unpopular and get slammed. Because of course the whole internet counts as America. Not to mention freedom of speech only means the government can't censor you, not that you can say whatever stupid bullshit you want, or that you're immune from consequences when you do
