More ridiculous news. So I heard the court ruled that Men At Work have to pay back royalties for "Land Down Under" - I hope they had some pretty convincing evidence because I don't buy it

Ugh, the IOC. A bunch of imbeciles. Did you hear the other recent line of bs they spouted, about women with "masculine features" needing to be tested and treated for hormomal disorders or something, because having higher testosterone, even naturally, is an unfair advantage. My belief is, if a woman isn't shooting up, then it's no one's fucking business.
And anyway, have they actually seen the women that make it to the Olympics? They're all buff and have masculine features, except maybe the figure skaters, and I'm not calling them weak or anything, but that's the only sport I can think of where the women look curvy and very feminine.
That is ... insane. And discriminatory. And downright scary! Every athlete is different and some have natural advantages like height or better eyesight or whatnot, and you're right - female athletes are gonna look less dainty 'cause of all that muscle, and developing muscle can I think affect your hormone/testosterone levels?
I think what constitutes a bigger unfair advantage is corporate sponsorship - and they are not supposed to be letting professional athletes, like pro tennis stars, compete either. The Olympics is meant to be for amateur sportspeople! People who have regular jobs. Most of them are, but you get the basketball, ice hockey, tennis, golf etc. players and it's all wrong.
I suspect it's not the use of a registered trade mark, so much as the use of a registered trade mark which doesn't generate them any income that they object to.

nary a Canuck who agrees with the "need" to take down the 'roo.
I hate what the Olympics have become. I will not be watching. I love the summer events...maybe it is the nearly naked swimmers and divers. Not sure really.
When the let pro athletes come and basically by themselves a medal to add to the their millions of professional income and hardware from being good at what they do. They don't for me represent the quest for being full of heart and dedication, nor do they represent Canada.

I enjoy watching them but I can't stand the constant in-your-face advertising.
Oh I know I completely agree, I just ranted about that with Kathryn (above). It taints it - it's so much more impressive and wonderful when athletes who have regular jobs and all compete and do well, and win medals even. Like the Canadian rowing team in the summer Games - they weren't professional athletes, they were "regular" people who trained hard in their own time and got a measly $24,000 from the government to help them get to the Games! When you let in all those fancy basketball and tennis and ice hockey players, it becomes just another flashy tournament - the wrong kind of competition, dunno who to describe the feeling. It's like cheating or something.

I vote for something- I would coin it as glory hoarding. It is Ph. D. thesis worthy topic.
I don't think it fair to blame the IOC as it is VANOC that is generally 'fucktarding' up the games and squirrelly rampant commercialism.
I mean...say you win a gold medal in cross country skiing and you want to celebrate with your teammates in the Olympic village. You can't have a rum and Pepsi because Coke is the sponsor. Clearly I would be the one athlete wearing Pepsi logo (ed) underwear under my uniform...secretly get a laugh at the stupidity of it all.
Oh and don't get me started. Oh too late. I was invited to take part in an art thing being presented along Olympics themes...I stepped away as I felt the theme of spiralling debt, violating the charter rights of the homeless and mentally ill on the streets of Vancouver, pollution, inability of the regular folks who are paying for the games (the citizens) are unable to get tickets to said games and well just too many people in one place.

I'd say they're easily as bad as each other ;) Don't you love that it always comes down to money? Or "profit", I should say. Did they do what Sydney did - load up the homeless and dump them somewhere else, out of sight? The issue of locals and citizens of the host country not being able to get tickets (or afford to go) happened back home too. They kept saying "we've reserved tickets for you, don't worry!" but that was a load of wank.
