Time Frame: Some time after his 2006 stay in rehab
Lots of children played the "what if?" game. Lots of adults played the "what if?" game, for that matter, but the child's version was much less serious. Very little "What if I hadn't stayed out drinking?" or "What if I'd said hi to her?" and more "What if there were giant bugs?" or "What if Santa caught you spying?"
Caleb used to play the "what if?" game, but his never involved giant bugs or Santa. Because everyone knew that bugs were small and Santa was a lie. His were different.
"What if he was more like his sisters?"
"What if he went to church and listened?"
"What if he prayed?"
"What if he believed?"
"What if Mom listened when he'd had a rough day?"
"What if Blake never stopped eating?"
"What if Aunt Deborah was his mom?"
"What if he ran away from home?"
"What if Dad loved him?"
Caleb stopped playing the "what if?" game when he met Viper and Mona. He stopped playing all of his games when he met them, and started playing theirs. Games of Chicken and Dare and Never Have I Ever. Games that made his head spin and his vision blur and his mind forget.
After his third visit to rehab, Caleb started playing "what if?" again.
"What if he'd never met Viper and Mona?"
"What if he'd never forgotten Stan's play?"
"What if he'd never gotten arrested?"
"What if he'd never tried that first joint?"
"What if he'd never taken that first ecstasy tablet?"
"What if he'd never swallowed that first Vicoden?"
"What if he'd swallowed them all?"
