How I happen upon good fic

The only bad part about being addicted to fanfic is that when the updates start to slow down I get desperate. My favorite method for trolling for fic is window shopping on the recent updates page of various archives. Goddess bless the archives.

The last few days I've been checking out the Silver Snitch and have found several interesting stories. Some with better betaing than others, but plenty to keep my interest for most of the hours in a day.

For some pleasant Snarry action try, The Ritual of the Apprentice. It is NC-17 so grown-ups only kiddies. This is obviously an apprentice story, but really its more of a master/slave kink then it is about apprenticeship. It's only 5 chapters so it's long enough to really get into something, but not so long that you can't get anything else done the day you sit down to read.

I also just found Emerald and Silver I. This is one of the AU WIP in which the author makes some drastic changes and rewrites all the books from first year. In this one Harry is found and adopted by the Malfoy's when he is four. RoxieSnape pulls this off with the old standby "they're not really evil, it's just an act for society's sake". I'm not sure how credible that theory is, but it's serves it's purpose here so whatever. Harry is a bit precocious for an 11 year old, even one raised by the Malfoy's, but I'm enjoying the story all the same. Harry's in Slytherin this time, with his brother Draco and Hermione, but he's still got a good heart. I love Harry in Slytherin so this is right up my alley. No pairings yet since she's still in first year, but I'm getting a definite slash vibe with leanings towards Harry/Blaise and later Harry/Snape. Oh yeah and there's pretty heavy vampire action.

For something long and finished I recently read The Domino Effect by jameschick. This is an HD that starts when Draco discovers Harry after he's been beaten and raped by members of the Slytherin quidditch team. She doesn't get graphic at first but it is replayed in detailed flashbacks later. Anyway from this traumatic event comes an unexpected friendship and romance. This is of course not a terribly original story idea. I've seen several "rape changed the course of my life" fics, probably because real rape is life changing, even more so than it is depicted in fiction. I enjoyed this because though the rape and Draco's care for Harry afterwards is the turning point jameschick doesn't rely on Harry's grief and anger about it to propel the whole story. Harry comes across some new books and gets into the darker side of magic, without becoming dark. Much of the story focuses on Harry's transition from the trio to Draco as his primary relationship. A nice break from your average rape story. Give it a try.

Enjoy the reading peeps.
