This image is actually almost the exact same size as the original, and all the drawings that are on my LJ are pretty much the same dimensions as this one. As for the process... in general, I try as much as possible to work completely improvisationally, which usually just means there isn't any underdrawing going on, say with graphite or something. It's just pen to paper from start to finish. Not that there isn't any premeditation, but when it comes to actually committing marks to the surface, there's no going back once thought becomes line (or dot) (or dash). With these sigil-based illustrations, though, I have had to transpose the symbols themselves from miniature sketches to scale versions onto the drawing surface using measurements and light graphite. The rest of the drawings are done organically, in several sessions.
And as to the interpretation of the symbols themselves, they do have identity, spirit, and import for me, though I usually maintain some secrecy around these interpretations to allow the viewer to draw their own conclusions. I invite and challenge that. Given a bit of meditation, such archetypal signs must begin to describe correlations in one's own personal cosmos or mythology. Once identity or essence has been seen in number, shape, direction, and relationship, sigils become more comprehensible, though there is ever a mysterious element of the subjective that retains a particular elusiveness, not only to the public but to they that conceive the symbol, as well. If you're interested, we could talk a bit more about this?
Right now I'm in the middle of working on a different illustration, a more in-depth type that has relationship to others that I've done but that you haven't personally seen before...
Hey! Curiosity appreciated, my friend.
