[Background] Ever since he was young, Kayashima was able to see things others couldn't: ghosts, spirits, auras, and the like. Because of his "strange powers," he was teased and ostracized in his early years of schooling, and generally didn't have any friends. When he started at Ohsaka Gakuen in his first year of high school, he met his roommate, Nakatsu-- an all-around nice guy who insisted on acting friendly despite Kayashima's general coldness. Kayashima explained at this point that maintaining friendships was annoying-- at this point he likely didn't have any good experiences with friends, which formed this view of his. Gradually, though, he began to open up a bit to Nakatsu and his friends, realizing that maybe having friends was more simple than he thought. The rumors about his special abilities were spreading around again, though, and generally he just ignored them, not letting it show that it bothered him. Then, on one occasion, he confronted the classmate who was teasing him, and proceeded to respond by telling this classmate what his little sister's ghost was saying to him. Well, the guy believed him then, and from that point the whispering stopped, and Kayashima was able to get by as a (relatively) normal high school student.
A while later, when the story takes place, Kayashima has gotten used to his life with friends and his role in the group. When Mizuki transfers in, Kayashima can tell right away that she's a girl (at an all-boys' school), but because no one else notices anything, he keeps quiet-- he doesn't want to cause trouble, and he likes her. Throughout the series he's mostly just seen popping up randomly as the omniscient weird aura-report-guy-slash-human-radar-- a role he seems to enjoy himself in.
[Personality] Kayashima is rather quiet and introverted, and tends to keep to himself. He's not one to go out of his way to make friends, but at the same time he appreciates having them. He generally doesn't express much emotion, tending to keep a sort of deadpan expression on his face most of the time. Because of his abilities, he tends to come across as a bit strange, and a lot of the time he just sort of acts as the all-knowing wise man of the group. He's the kind of person who won't go around telling people what he is able to see about others from auras (see below-- this could be subjective in extreme cases); it's not his business, really, and he doesn't want to cause a disturbance. This applies especially to the people he's close to-- he will use what he knows to help a person out in a pinch, or give them reassurance about a problem they're having (albeit without telling them he knows what the problem is). He tends to be very blunt and direct when he speaks; he's not the type to go soft on anyone when he's conversing with them if there's no reason to. He opens up a bit more to friends, as well, and he tends to have a "tough love" type of policy with them, especially his roommate Nakatsu (making him get out of bed in the morning, telling him not to look for any sympathy if he's hungry when he skips dinner, etc). Still, he won't hesitate to help comfort those same friends in a spot of real grief or trouble. In the same vein, he has a bit of a mischievous streak; he likes to scare people with stories that may or may not be true about nearby spirits, simply to watch them freak out. Basically, he likes to be able to amuse himself at his friends' expense-- a bit of harmless fun. This doesn't just apply to spirits, either-- he just likes doing or saying things that will make his friends freak out, and he'll stand there normally with a perfectly straight face, amusing himself with their antics.
[Specialties/Abilities] As mentioned multiple times before, Kayashima has quite a few supernatural abilities. He can see and communicate with ghosts and spirits, as well as read people's auras. Auras are very telling, and from them Kayashima is able to see a number of things, such as basic personality, emotions and feelings, even gender. Due to this and just generally being smart, he's rather more perceptive than people would hope. He also has other random abilities, like taking photos that have ghosts in them, or putting up a barrier around himself (to keep out flying objects or unwanted smells, for example), or finding items as a sort of human radar.
He is also the king of dodgeball. And bowling. And he also has this weird ability to be able to do insane, inhuman yoga poses like they're totally, perfectly normal.
