On June 4, 2008, the Army Corps of Engineers declared the Los Angeles River not to be a traditional, navigable river. This meant its tributaries would no longer be protected under the Clean Water Act. The River's friends challenged this declaration by planning a three day voyage down the river by kayak and canoe.
