A Visit to the Pasadena Humane Society

The Pasadena Humane Society offers a free pet loss support group the first Saturday of every month and I went to one. There were ten people there plus the leader--seven dog people and three cat people. We all told the stories of our pets. It was sad, but good for me. I wish I didn't have to wait a month for the next one.

You could hear the dogs in the kennel barking during the meeting. Of course I had to look at them. I need a daily dose of dog! A lot of them barked at me. I'm not used to dogs barking at me, because most of them know I'm their friend. Those poor shelter dogs are horribly stressed out, but I think some of them also just didn't want to deal with my sadness. "You're not ready for us," the dogs said, though I'm probably reading too much into it. There were several other dogs that were quiet, sweet and friendly. Two adolescent pit bulls were very friendly and they just sparkled, but unfortunately, someone had done a nasty job of cropping their ears. There was a white husky with blue eyes that was so beautiful I wanted to take him home just so I could continue to look at him. I wrote down the numbers of five or six dogs I liked.

There was one special dog. A brindle pit bull mix with white markings. Different from Petey. Smaller and less flashy. She had a special look in her eyes. I disregarded the sign that said not to put your fingers into the enclosures. I'm lucky to have small hands. She didn't want me to leave. I told her I would come back for her. I needed to have UncleSocial meet her before I adopted her, and he was busy with a musical event all weekend. The shelter is closed today. Tomorrow we will go and see whether she is still there.

Her ID # is A226424 if you want to see her picture on the shelter website.
