i am in a foreign college or high school. i tour the halls with someone who is presumably a friend of mine, and she walks me to the theater. i realize i am backstage and there is some sort of play going on. i look over to ask my friend about it, but she has disappeared.

a middle aged woman with a microphone and a clipboard approaches and grabs my hand. "you'll have to do," she says. "can you lip sync?"

"what?" i say.

"can you dance?"

"no, not really."

she puts a red wig on my head, leads me to the stage, and pushes me on. there is a full audience in front of me. a girl to my right leans over and whispers in my ear.

"First you lip sync the song," she says, "and then when it is finished, you grab your head like you have a headache. Then you will disappear and reappear in that corner over there."

"How do I disappear?"

She ignores this question and the music starts. It is a Britney Spears song I have never heard. I follow the girl's directions somewhat haphazardly, and miraculously, I disappear after the song is over. When I reappear in the corner, a man whispers in my ear.

"Now you have to do a Plie in fourth position."

As I follow the directions, I hear from the front row of the audience, "This girl can't dance." I want to tell the audience member that I've never done anything like this before and I haven't even rehearsed.

I feel like what I am doing is ridiculous, but I continue to follow the whispered directions I keep getting from my numerous fellow stage mates, who seem to be doing nothing but standing there.

When the play is finished, the audience leaves, murmuring complaints about the performance. The woman with the clipboard approaches me and reprimands me for my dancing. I ask her to please be a little nicer, I was only doing what I was told to do.
