"Visit either you like: they're both mad..."

The Law of Fives is never wrong, this is a given.

But then there is Duality, intrinsically tied in with Duplicity, things seem to happen if not in twos then in a manner that maintains a certain balance or equality. A most practical example can be seen present in the Taoist Yin-Yang, between both Chaos and Order equilibrium is perpetuated. Would there even be a word to describe day if there was no night. In keeping with this theme the separate parts of the Duality define each other, one is the opposite of the other and vice versa.
It is taken for granted that our waking hours are Reality, there can only be one such reality because we use this concept to provide a yardstick against which every other experience can be measured. Day is also linked with light which is subconsciously positive in the same way that West associates white with "Good" and black with "Evil". Likewise absence of light, darkness, Night is in comparison threatening.

In some ways I guess, things are easier to cope with in a purely binary sense, Good/Evil light/dark reality/dream, no allowances for anything bar one of the two opposites.

Since we live life in two halves then why should half be overly valued, isn't this a violation of the balance. If waking is order then dreaming is a state of mind where you are the sole architect, your subconscious mind draws on your experiences and creates a world with no semblance of logic or natural order. In dream an embodiment of you is always present and interacting with the constructed environment, though this manifestation of you does not always mirror your exact waking you there is still a connection, persona, that which makes you you, think Residual Self Image from The Matrix, how your subconscious views itself. Let me state now that I believe Freud was misguided and misinformed, maybe he believed what he published but I surely do not.

Of a night I relish the chance to return from waking back to the whim and flux of my inner mind. Every dream is an adventure where I am no longer bound by anything other than myself. This is not to say that they are bright and pleasant for even your RSI has little direct control of the created environment. It is not as easy as to say I had a dream or I had a nightmare, in waking we have no comparable words, every dream is nightmare but not in such a negative sense, in dream one has to accept seemingly nonsensical situations and adapt to the new conditions that are being constantly thrown up.

Last night I fought the undead, faced horrors from the depths of my fears, bore witness to the violent demise of loved ones and on the whole dealt better with nonsense and uncertainty that with any day of waking.

Escapism, yes. But am I escaping waking or are you escaping your dreams.
