High Adventures

There isn't a lot that excites Rebecca, or rather there is but not often does she show that excitement. So the boys and I were quite amused yet wary when she burst into the room clearly bursting to tell us all something.

We'd been sitting there playing with the numericon set that we'd purchased to hep the boys with their numbers and maths. They were like two little sponges soaking up any and every piece of knowledge that they could reminding me so very much of their older sisters.

As I looked up I couldn't help but worry slightly, I looked to Sarah for clues but she just had a very satisfied smile on her face., what ever Rebecca had to share had obviously met with her approval.

"Mum!' Rebecca exclaimed.

'You have something to tell me?" I said.

"Yes, wait...how could you tell?"

I couldn't help but laugh, "There are subtle little clues." I said, "so is this news i want to hear or will my purse start to sweat a bit?"

"Um...hhmmm." She said renewing my nervousness.

"It's both, I think." Sarah said winking at Rebecca before looking at me with a face of pure innocence.

"Hhhhhm both you say...well then let's have it."

"Will we like it?" Josiah said, "Is it a cool thing for boys?"

"I remember how we liked to go for high tea when we were on holiday in New Zealand?"

"I don't bremember that." Rory said thoughtfully, "Well my mind can't bremember it."

"That's because you didn't come Squirt." Rebecca said, "You went out with Dad."

"Oh I bremember him!" Rory said grinning.

"That's a relief." Sarah said rolling her eyes ever so slightly.

"I'm not going back to New Zealand just for High Tea", I said, "lovely though it was."

"You don't have to!" Rebecca said getting all excited again."

"The tea shop in Foxton has it!" Sarah said.

"Oh buzz kill!" Rebecca said pouting, "I wanted to say that."

"Well you can say the next bit." Sarah said but I noticed she looked at me.

"I booked us in!" Rebecca said triumphantly.

"Us, too?" Josiah said, "Do we have to go and drink tea like ladies?"

"You like tea!" Rebecca said.

"I know, but I don't drink it like a lady." Josiah said indigently.

"And we don't eat those little sandwiches, either!" Rory said.

"Hey you like those little sandwiches!" Sarah said equally as indignant.

"Yeah that's true...but not like ladies." Rory said.

"So, Rebecca....just who did you book in and for when?" I said unsure of whether i really wanted to know.

"Well me and Sarah...naturally."

"Naturally", I said, "and?"

"Well, you of course."

"Of course", I said winking, "anyone else?"

"Bryony." Rebecca said.

"What about..."

"Frances? I almost did but she might be at school... besides I just thought..well I just thought..I'm not sure what I thought."

I smiled, "I think Bryony would love it." I said.

"They have a special one for children." Sarah said sounding rather like an advertisement for the place.

"You didn't..did you?"

"Mum!" Rebecca said, "I'm wounded, of course we didn't book Bryony in as a child, she'll get exactly the same as we all do."

I was relieved, I knew that would be important to her.

"So", I said, "when is all this wonderfulness going to happen?"

"Tomorrow." Rebecca said pausing just a moment before her whole face lit up, "So we can go? It's okay."

Again I couldn't help but laugh, "Becca", I said, "was there really ever any doubt?"

She didn't answer she was already out of the door, probably I thought on her way to tell Bryony and I hoped to ask Emma's permission.

"One day Mum." Josiah said, "You should say no."

"Oh I will don't you worry."

"When" Rory said.

"When the time is right or wrong." I said then laughed at his puzzled little look.

"Mum can you practice saying 'no' another day?" Josiah said grinning at Rory.

"Why's that?" I said despite the feeling I had of what was coming next.

"Because Rory and I would really love an ice-cream."

"No!" I said.

"Really?" He said.

"No!" I said.

"Okay, Mum", Rory said, "That's 'nuff practice."

As we went down to the kitchen to ask Ravensmoore about ice-cream I couldn't help but notice the whispering that went on between the boys.

"Next time, Josiah", Rory whispered, "you should ask for a pony."
