I've never been very good at making choices and usually avoid them by giving myself a lack of options. I usually leave my wallet at my office so that I won't be tempted to bring it home with me and spend money. Admittedly, to leave one's wallet in the first place is a choice (one can choose, I suppose, to refuse choice). At the same time,

I can't vouch for whether or not Toronto has changed--it'd become my new fantasy city anyway, my dream and refuge for when things get tough in "reality", but there are still solid people there, and you can meet 15 awesome people in, like, a week if you sit at the right cafes, which is definitely something that can't be said about Boston. here, you have to sit with 15 people in 15 different circles and hope that they bring someone.
here's my take: these years ARE miserable. there's no way around it. we're either soulless on the lowest professional rung or intellectually satisfied and flat broke. everyone thinks that everyone else's path is working out better for them, and we miss our un-recapturable university days. our parents don't stand up and cheer for us anymore when we pay our hydro bills on time. but i think there's also an emphasis on making money that's unhealthy. we feel like we have to make enough for the rest of our lives, as though the misery is caused by our jobs, and once we're rich, we can go traveling and buy boats and be happy. make as much as you need, as much as it takes to feel comfortable--which it sounds like you've already done--and then do something to alleviate the misery. come home. start a life here that WORKS for you. come back to a place where you can date again. you already HAVE a masters. there is employment to be had, i assure you.
and P.S., i don't know about you, but that whole "you'll be miserable until you're in grad school" mentality is WHACK. grad school is a torture to be endured. it's like watching reality and paychecks fly through the wind through the window while you remain shackled to the libary desk.
well...actually, i DO know about you. so i'll just speak for me. :)
(still want to read my benjamin paper?)
