To Bobby Poindexter (an open letter)

May 31, 2010 20:30

28 years ago, we broke up when you told me you were joining the Navy. You were just too young, but had your parents' permission, so the Navy was going to take you. I couldn't imagine you in the military, having known you as a soft-spoken boy who made me feel special and looked at life with seriousness and silliness through long dark hair and glasses.

Of all my ex boyfriends, I have thought of you more than occasionally. I don't kid myself we would be together now... we were so young, and so much life was ahead of us. I just wonder, every so often, how you are. Did the Navy treat you well? Did you find what you were looking for? Did you marry the right girl and have kids? Would we even recognize each other if we passed on the street? Did you ever become the philosopher I saw in you?

Not a year has passed that I don't wish we had written a few letters once you went off, and with every "military action" the US gets into, I wonder if you are still in, if you went career Navy, if you are safe, if you are happy.

I will probably never know, and that makes me inexpressibly sad.

Blessings on you, Bobby Poindexter. I hope life has been good to you.
Happy Memorial Day, Bobby.
