To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar
If you haven't seen
To Wong Foo, well, that needs to be fixed. It's fabulous. You too can weep that Tybalt John Leguizamo has way better legs than you do.
Anyway, the movie is essentially a drag queen road trip. Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze), Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes), and Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Leguizamo) all participate in a contest for Drag Queen of the Year in New York. Vida and Noxeema end up in a tie and win a trip to Hollywood for the national finals. They take pity on "drag princess" Chi-Chi and sell their plane tickets so they can buy a car and road trip it to LA.
Soon after beginning the trip, they pass by Vida's childhood home, and there is a moment of angst as Vida's mother sees her, then just shakes her head and goes back into the house. Vida angrily drives away, tossing the map out of the car, which soon results in them getting lost in the midwest.
Along the way, they are pulled over by a cop who attempts to assault Vida before realizing she is not biologically female. Vida knocks Sheriff Dollard unconscious but thinks he is dead due to Chi-Chi's questionable diagnosis skills. She and the others flee, but then their car breaks down. They end up in the small town of Snydersville and have to stay for several days in a bed & breakfast while the car is repaired.
Vida soon realizes that their hostess, Carol Ann, is being abused by her husband, Virgil, the town mechanic. Noxie advises her to stay out of it. Chi-Chi leads on a young man who lives in the town, also incurring Vida's anger because Chi-Chi is deceiving the boy. No one in the town seems to realize they are not biologically female, and everyone treats them like women. They eventually befriend many of the town residents and raid a vintage clothing store and set about trying to improve the town by giving makeovers and teaching manners and helping to organize the Strawberry Social.
Meanwhile, not-dead Sheriff Dollard is obsessed with finding Vida. He runs into Virgil, who was finally beat up by Vida after she hears him hitting Carol Ann. Virgil clues Dollard into where Vida and the others are, and they head to Snydersville and demand they turn over the drag queens.
Carol Ann comes out of her house wearing a red wedding dress and veil and claims to be a drag queen. Then one by one the rest of the town step forward and claim to be Spartacus a drag queen. Dollard and Virgil leave, and everyone enjoys the Strawberry Social.
After Carol Ann finishes the car repairs, the drag queens continue on their way to LA, but not before Carol Ann tells Vida she knew Vida was a man all along but didn't care. Vida and the others make it to LA where Chi-Chi wins the national Drag Queen of the Year title and receives a crown from Julie Newmar.
Miss Vida Boheme
In the words of Noxeema Jackson: "When a straight man puts on a dress and gets his sexual kicks, he is a transvestite. When a man is a woman trapped in a man's body and has a little operation, he is a transsexual. When a gay man has WAY too much fashion sense for one gender, he is a drag queen."
Vida was born in a rich family in the town of Bala-Cynwyd, PA, just west of Philly. Her parents named her Eugene, but growing up, "Eugene" realized that he was gay and wanted to be a she. She embarassed her family by dressing in women's clothing and imitating Esther Williams in "Million Dollar Mermaid" in a park fountain, "thus marring the Methodist's annual picnic." Her parents were unable to accept her for what she was, so Vida ran away from home to live her life on her own terms.
She ended up in New York City and joined the local drag scene, eventually becoming well-known and popular, culminating with being jointly crowned with Noxie as Drag Queen of the Year.
Vida is proud of who she is, though she can get nervous around small town people who probably wouldn't understand -- she's seen her share of insults and abuse hurled at people like her. She misses her family, but is also angry they won't love her for who she is. She is very much a mother hen type and can't ignore someone being abused or mistreated.
Most importantly, Miss Vida is a lady (though if she has to defend herself or someone else, she won't hesitate to punch someone). She wears a wig and makeup and padding under her fabulous dresses, but it's not hard to figure out that she's biologically male under all that, so if your character wants to realize that, it's fine.
Vida has no special powers other than a fashion sense to DIE for. Well, that and possible mystical interior decorating powers. Really.
She is coming to Fandom after the events of the movie. Chi Chi is busy with her Drag Queen of the Year duties, and Noxie walked into a role in some Wesley Snipes movie or something. Vida, on the other hand, decides that there are more towns like Snyderville in need of a fairy godmother. Since maps are for cheaters, she just lets the road take her where it will. After several stops along the way, she's ended up on the causeway to Fandom. Originally she was going to take over the spa, but she will be instead taking over the flower shop once I finalize the details with Miss Eliza. :-)
