Winding Down

Well, we had our last officially scheduled summer activity last night. The monster truck rally at the county fair. Totally redneck, I know. It's not something we would normally do, but the boys loved it as I knew they would. I try to expose them to all kinds of things, and I figured this was at the county fair and therefore probably tame as well as redneckery goes, and I was right. It turns out that it was mostly people just like us, taking advantage of the last days of summer and taking their kids to something wild and out of the ordinary. I was a little worried that we'd be surrounded by swearing hooligans throwing beer and having sex in the bleachers, but no. Most people were just eating their fair food and trying to calm their toddlers cause it was really late and really loud but actually a lot of fun. My boys slept in this morning and then woke up and played monster trucks for awhile. It was only $6 a ticket, Bram was free, and I'm thinking we'll totally do it again next year. But I will for sure be bringing ear plugs for everyone. Instead, I tore the one pair I had in half, gave it to the older boys, and then Mat and Bram and I had to suffer with tissues stuffed in our ears. Oh well. Live and learn.

So the summer lessons are done, the school clothes are bought, we met the teachers at Back to School Night, we're in the process of cleaning the boys' room, etc., and we'll be good to go for next week. On the one hand I can't believe summer is over. The kids are ready, though. They're fighting more and bored more and I'm definitely reading for them to go back. I like the structure and the learning and the fact that they're not bugging me all day to play on the stupid devices. They're allowed so little time, really, and they have to earn it by doing chores and then only get 15 minutes, but they're constantly bugging me and I'm sick of it all. School will be a nice change of pace. I guess that's how the end of summer should be, right? You look back at the good times, and yet you're ready to be back to normally scheduled life.
