The Imminent Schooling

I had a PTA meeting today with the principal and with the PTA president. I am next year's president elect for PTA. I have no desire to be one of those crazy power hunger PTA ladies who dress all expensive and look all polished and campaign for different positions and whatev, but no one else was really saying they would do it so I guess it's me. I did want to be part of PTA so that I could be part of the school and be involved in the kids' education and all, and PTA is a really good way to do that in our school because we basically do all of the fun activities. I was PTA secretary last year, but it turns out that it's pretty sweet being president elect because you're basically just an assistant to the president. Our president is one of those women who can do anything and she has a ton of vision, so it's nice to be part of something like that.

I do like our little school, and I like that it's in our neighborhood and also that it is such that we can be very involved in it. It is a Title 1 school because they bring some lower income kids in from another area, so it's a little weird in that there's our neighborhood with all the parents who are involved and have lots of opporunities for their kids and then in the other part of the school population there is a lot of poverty. That means that our neighborhood actually has a lot of influence and say in what happens, and I think it benefits everybody. At least we try to make it that way. I've enjoyed the Title 1 status--we have a lot of money, especially for technology, and I've been happy with our teachers, too.

But I can't believe that school is starting in such a short time. I'm not sad, in fact, I think it will be great for the kids to be involved in school again, but it does seem that summer went by really quickly. I know that Eli is very excited about kindergarten, and I think it will be nice for him to be at school with Gabe, even if he doesn't see him that often. I requested Gabe's kindergarten teacher for Eli, and even though they are supposedly not taking requests, my letter did mention my PTA involvement and how it really might help out my volunteering if I got who I wanted. We'll see what happens. The principal knows me (obviously, since I'm having meetings with her and all) and so I'm hoping she at least gives me who I want for teachers.  The kindie teachers are all really good, actually, but I do like Gabe's former teacher so it would be nice if that worked out.
