Chapter Two of Two
The argument raged on into the night. The PM was loath to base such a major decision on the works of an unknown like Connor, although he had read all the reports and was well aware of his brilliance. It finally came down to Philip’s name and his defense of Connor’s work as well as the fact that if they ignored this and did nothing, the world was going to know anyway and would not be prepared for what was coming. In the end, they would not thank the UK for keeping this from them so it was decided that a meeting of the world’s powers must be arranged.
It should have come to no one’s surprise that several countries already had anomaly research going on and were hiding it from the rest. Technicians and scientists from all parts of the globe were en route to the ARC to work with Connor.
Philip also spoke with the minister about acquiring and training more soldiers in order to have several teams available for shouts when convergence began and Connor, along with the Prospero scientists, began working on how to predict the anomalies.
Abby would work out where they could put more creatures, Becker would work out which of the men on his force would make strong team leaders, and Matt would work out what they would need to arm more teams.
As the days went by, the team worked around the clock. They all knew how important it was that they be ready to face what was undoubtedly going to happen and none worked harder than Connor. Abby was hard-pressed to convince him that sleep was not only needed but necessary if he was to do accomplish his goals. .
“I have to do this,” Connor said. “I have to work it out before convergence or we won’t be ready.”
Abby placed her hands on each side of his face and made him look at her. “Connor, thanks to you, we will be ready. Everyone is finally working together for a common goal, no secrets, as it should be. We will be ready, but if you don’t eat or sleep, you’ll end up in hospital and how will that help?” They touched their foreheads together and smiled at one another, their connection as strong now as it had been in the Cretaceous.
It was no secret around the ARC that the relationship between Connor and Abby had undergone a significant change. Connor had realized some time ago, before the Cretaceous, that although he would always love Abby, he just wasn’t attracted to her in that way.

Philip watched from the shadows, his heart constricting in his chest. That was what he’d been missing. Not the sexual part, because that wasn’t at the core of how Connor and Abby felt about one another, it was the pure friendship. Their love was based on trust and friendship born of their trials and tribulations and Philip wanted that, craved it to his very soul. He’d had good friends once, but his hunger for money, fame, and power had pushed his friends to the side. He’d told himself that he’d have them again one day but first, he had work to do. It turned out that he had run out of time. All his friends had moved on with their lives and here he was rich, famous, powerful, and the loneliest man alive.
He’d been given another chance, though, in Connor Temple.

Connor had spent countless hours working through the data collected from each and every anomaly. However, he kept going back to those located in the Forest of Dean, the racetrack, and in the old lab of Christine Johnson. Those three locations had the most frequent reoccurrence of the anomalies so they had set up a permanent base in each location with equipment geared to record all activity. In that way, they were able to study them more closely than any others and what they found was an increase in the magnetic fields surrounding the sites just before an anomaly opened. Connor was skeptical. Could it have been that simple? Because if that was the case, all they’d need to do was make some adaptations to the ADD. Incorporating a component that would detect high instances of magnetic energy in a specific location should alert them to a new anomaly so he set to work making the adaptations and then, they waited.

For the most part, none of the team were willing to go to their homes so most of them stayed at the ARC in the bunk rooms. No one wanted to miss out on the ‘maiden voyage’ as it were, of the new alarm system and finally, all their hard work paid off when the alarms, completely different from the ADD alarm, went off.
Connor tore to the hub reading through the directions being provided and with a worried glance around said, “Okay, this is it. According to these calculations, an anomaly is going to open in the Forest of Dean.”
“When?” asked Becker.
“Well, considering the strength of the magnetic field, within the next few hours,” Connor replied.
“Then let’s go.” And Becker and his team ran to the garage, followed by Connor, Abby, Matt, and Emily.
It was a quiet journey to the site and when they arrived, nothing was happening but they collected the locking device and EMDs and prepared to wait.
At the beginning of the project, they’d used Connor’s trusty compass to try to measure the strength of the magnetic fields and how long they might last, however, they had eventually begun using a magnetometer which gave them a more precise reading and the ability to tell more quickly that the anomaly was growing weaker. Connor was holding such a device and said, “It’s getting stronger, guys. I think this is it.”
All of a sudden, right on time, the anomaly opened and was immediately locked. Abby couldn’t help but think if they’d had this technology years before, they’d have been able to stop Helen in her tracks. She thought briefly of Cutter and Stephen.
There was complete silence and then, an eruption of cheers from all gathered, everyone trying to pat Connor on the back. Abby had thrown herself into his arms and whispered, “I knew you could do it. We all did. We never lost faith in you.”
Connor just smiled and quickly made a call to the ARC to give Lester and Philip the good news.
When they returned, and all reported to Lester, he looked up from his desk, straight at Connor and simply said, “About bloody time,” and returned to his work shooing them all out of his office with a wave of his hand, although, Abby was fairly certain she’d seen a small smile on that normally stern face.
Connor and the techs immediately set to work making certain that there were plenty of locking devices available, as well as the hand-held magnetometers.
The scientists and technicians from around the world descended on the ARC in droves. Connor held seminars, explaining the technology and answering questions. Soon, they all had the diagrams and directions needed to build their own devices and returned home to put their plans in place.

“Connor,” Philip asked one afternoon, “would you like to have dinner with me this evening?”
Connor, who had been working out how to build an even smaller device to measure the fields, looked up at Philip and simply asked, “Why”.
“Can’t one colleague spend an evening with another without it meaning anything?” he asked.
Connor looked into Philip’s eyes; however, Philip was unable to meet his gaze and shifted away. Connor said, “Yeah, that’s pretty much what I thought.”
“What?” asked Philip “Why does it have to mean anything?”
Connor laughed. “You and I both know that it’s not just ‘dinner’ so how about you admit it?”
“All right, there may be more to my request than just ‘dinner’ but I do think we need to talk about what… happened.” Philip was nervous and this made him even more uncomfortable because Philip Burton did not do nervous.
“All right,” Connor said, after watching him for a moment. “We’ll have dinner and then see where that takes us.”
They left the ARC and headed for a small bistro that Philip enjoyed. Connor was somewhat skeptical about the place as he tended more towards pub fry ups and beer but he was willing to give Philip the benefit of the doubt.
The food and wine were exceptional and the two men were soon deep in conversation, steering clear of anything ARC related. They discovered a shared passion for, of all things, comic books and football and when Philip confessed his guilty pleasure of American football, Connor looked at him in amazement as he, too, enjoyed sneaking a peek every now and again.
They spoke of their childhoods and their dreams and when the conversation slowed, they simply looked in each other’s eyes and finally, Philip asked, “Coffee at mine?”
Connor considered a moment before he nodded.

The ride to Philip’s flat was made in companionable silence with the two men making vague comments about what was happening in the world.
When they entered the flat, Connor took the initiative and grabbed Philip, pushing him into the wall and taking control of his mouth, begging entrance. Philip complied and their tongues began a dance of dominance. At the same time, Connor began removing Philip’s clothing. He pushed his suit jacket off on to the floor, removed his tie, and began to slowly unbutton his shirt, finally able to feel skin as he smoothed his hands over Philip’s chest, softly rubbing his nipples before moving to his trousers. At this point, Connor moved back a bit and looked in Philip’s eyes, waiting for a response. Philip smiled and nodded. Connor moved back in and ground his hips against Philip’s. He could feel their cocks growing harder and they continued to grind together, breathing heavily until Connor finally spoke.
“Oh, this will never do.” And he began moving them across the room towards the king-sized bed. “I believe you’ll find we can do a much better job of this over on that large, comfortable bed.”
Connor pushed Philip on to the bed and stood beside it, and began to slowly remove his clothing. Philip lay back, lacing his fingers behind his head as he watched. Connor slowly lifted his shirt over his head, and Philip’s eyes darkened as they traveled from his broad shoulders, noting the tattoos on his right arm and his left wrist, and smiled over the pierced nipple, followed his taut, muscled torso down to his narrow waist and hips.
Philip finally saw what he wanted when Connor slowly unbuttoned his trousers and lowered the zip, shoving them, with his boxers, down over his slim hips and freeing his already-leaking cock, which was standing straight and tall and he stood before Philip who devoured him with his eyes.
Philip couldn’t help himself. He slid off the bed onto his knees and took Connor’s cock into his mouth down to the root. Licking and sucking, moving up and down the shaft, sticking his tongue into the slit at the tip of Connor’s cock, he was reducing Connor to a gibbering fool.
Connor stopped himself from fucking Philip’s mouth and just let him take the lead but he so wanted to grab fistfuls of Philip’s hair and just hold his head still as he fucked him into oblivion but he controlled himself and as he could feel his climax, his gibberish began to include coherent words, “Philip! Gonna come… gotta stop.. gotta …gahhhhh!” Philip than began to suck hard and Connor came in his mouth, screaming his name.
Connor collapsed onto the bed with Philip beside him, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. “Think you’re pretty smart, don’t you,” Connor said with a sly smirk as he pushed Philip into the bed with one hand as he lowered the zip on Philip’s trousers. “Well, let’s see if I can beat you at your own game.”
Connor leaned in and began with a soft kiss that grew more insistent, his tongue exploring every part of Philip’s mouth. Meanwhile, he worked his hand into Philip’s pants and took hold of his cock and began to stroke it, softly at first and then more firmly, adding a twist at the end causing Philip to begin to groan until Connor stopped.
“Why have you stopped?” he asked quietly
“Because,” Connor responded softly, as he spread soft kisses up Philip’s neck to his ear, “I’d really like to feel you inside me, fucking me into the mattress.”
With that, Philip’s eyes widened in surprise and he sat up, pushing Connor onto his back, running his hands up his chest, smiling as he stopped to tweak the nipple ring. He leaned in and kissed Connor with mounting fervour, his cock so hard he thought he was going to explode. His hand moved down Connor’s body until he reached his hole and began to ghost his finger around and over it causing Connor’s hips to jerk and a whimper to escape his throat.
Philip reached over to his bedside table, opened the drawer and removed a tube of lube and a condom. He sat up and moved down the bed until he was between Connor’s legs with Connor watching every move he made. He slicked his finger and again, began to move it around Connor’s hole and when he thought he couldn’t stand it, he pushed his finger in, crooking it to gently brush against Connor’s prostate making Connor’s whimper turn into a groan, jerking his hips into Philip’s finger. Soon, one finger became two and then three with Connor writhing and groaning, and trying desperately to fuck himself on Philip’s fingers.
Philip chuckled. “Patience, Connor. All good things come to those who wait.”
“Fuck waiting!” Connor groaned, “if you don’t stick that cock of yours balls deep into my arse within the next 30 seconds, I will not be responsible for what I will do to your comic book collection!”
Laughing at the threat, Philip slipped on the condom and slicked it with more lube and did just as Connor asked and pushed his cock past the tight ring of muscle and deep in his hot channel and began to thrust, slowly at first and then speeding up. Connor met each and every thrust, helping to drive Philip’s cock deep into his centre hitting his prostate every time. Connor’s eyes rolled back and the pleasure coursing through his body was causing his cock to harden once more. Philip’s breathing became erratic and he groaned out, “Connor, grab your cock, fuck your hand and make yourself come for me.”
Connor complied, pumping his cock hard, at the same time arching into Philip’s thrusts until with a rough shout, both men came, Philip shooting his come into Connor’s willing body and Connor shooting thick streams over his and Philip’s chests.
Philip collapsed on Connor who reached his arms around his waist, holding him tight, their lips met once again and they explored each other’s mouths.
Philip sighed and whispered, “I should really move before I suffocate you.” He moved off Connor and lay to his side, still touching, enjoying the feeling of Connor lying there, sated. Philip moved from the bed to get a towel to clean them off. He laid back down and Connor curled into him and they quickly fell asleep.
*****
The next morning brought more of the same and Philip had never felt so alive. If he’d had his way, he’d have moved Connor into his flat that day but he knew he had to take things slowly. He didn’t know whether this had been a one-off or whether Connor truly felt something for him so he was determined that they would have a serious discussion but that discussion had to wait when both their mobiles went off calling them back to the ARC where all hell was breaking loose.
*****
Connor’s enhancement to the ADD was working and teams were being sent all over the city and country with locking devices. Matt had recommended that they allow the anomaly to open for a moment, and then close it once they were certain nothing had come through, thus allowing convergence to occur but limiting the damage that could be done.
Anomalies were opening all over the world but thanks to the work done by the ARC team, they were able to have some semblance of control and injuries were kept to a minimum. There had been instances of creatures getting through, however, the SF teams were highly trained and had been able to get most of the creatures back to their own times but some ended up stranded and Abby made certain they were well cared for.
It had been a long day, made longer for Philip by the fact that Connor insisted on being out in the field with the team. He’d come back covered in muck and mud, having had to leap into a flooded ditch to avoid a rather confused Minmi, a metre tall and two and a half metres long, and about half a ton in weight who wanted only to get back home and the rather inconsiderate two legged, pasty faced beast had been in his way so he’d done what he did best and tried to run through it, causing an impromptu swim in the mud.
When Connor limped into the ARC, covered in mud, Philip was left in no doubt as to how he felt about the young scientist, much to no one’s surprise. He’d been about as subtle as the Minmi in his feelings toward Connor so for the most part, everyone was relieved to have it out in the open.
He took Connor aside, “Connor, I don’t want you going out in the field any more. You’re a scientist, not an action hero. Let someone else do the evidence gathering, you stay here and analyze what they bring you.”
Connor simply smiled. “Get used to it, Philip. If you want to be a part of my life, you need to accept that sometimes I am going to go out into the field and sometimes, I’m going to get hurt… actually, that happens quite a lot, but still, it’s something you need to be aware of. That’s my life and I won’t change it.”
“Will you at least try to be more careful?” Philip asked softly.
Connor laughed. “Believe me, Philip, I do my best to keep from getting hurt but it seems that sometimes, no matter how hard I try, I just seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ask Becker, he’s always hauling my arse out of trouble.”
Philip sighed. “I knew this was a bad idea. Two alpha males. We’re just going to butt heads aren’t we?”
Connor burst out laughing. “Two alpha males butting heads? You make it sound as if we were goats. I don’t care what anyone says, you are the funniest guy I’ve ever met. No, seriously, Philip, everything I’ve ever dreamed of doing, I am doing now and by some happy chance of fate, I found you. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to question that. I’m going to accept it and go where it takes me.” At that, he pulled Philip to a quiet corner and kissed him, softly but thoroughly. “Now, how about we adjourn to yours and discuss this a little further. Hmmm?”
Philip laughed. “Indeed.”
*****
Philip came back to himself with a start. He was still in bed but Connor was starting to stir. It had taken two months to convince Connor to move in with him. By that time, he had been spending every night at Philip’s so it made perfect sense and they knew in their hearts of hearts that they belonged together.
There had been some dicey moments. After all, they were both leaders so there had been much compromise. Theirs was a partnership both in their work lives and their personal lives. They respected one another and worked very hard to make their relationship work. Part of that was that Philip had had to learn to loosen up. They spent a great deal of time out with the whole team at a local pub and Philip found that he very much enjoyed being part of this group of highly intelligent people. They traded ideas, discussed trends, and just had fun.
But now, Connor was awakening and Philip looked into those dark eyes, so full of love, and leaned in and gently kissed his young love. Their passions built and they began their day as they did every day, with a physical affirmation of their love.
Philip had found what he had lost so many years before… friendship, acceptance, and love. What more could he ask?
