Author Notes  First of all, thank you to fififolle who has read this through so many times, she's memorized it and also for letting me borrow Mad Joe and Peter from her fic "Front Door Key" and if you haven't read this, why not?  It's amazing and will give you insight into Mad Joe.  Also, thanks to Fredbassett for letting me borrow Lyle and Ditzy and to Jooles34 for letting me play in her Lester/Connor/Becker sandbox, sorry, I seem to have knocked down your sand castle. If I start naming all those who have inspired me, we'll be here all day and I'll miss someone so just go look at the list of authors, most, if not all, of you have inspired me in one way or another.  Thank you.  Oh, almost forgot, Dr. Heather Kessler is a character from "CSI" and knows a thing or twelve about the dom_sub culture.

Chapter 6

Abby and Lester had been convinced that it would be best if they stayed at the ARC.  Abby had gone into Lester’s office and he was just staring down at Connor’s collar in his hand, a look of such despair, that her heart immediately went out to him and she moved quickly to his side and took him in her arms.  What amazed her was that he allowed it.

“Why isn’t he wearing it?” Abby pointed to the collar in Lester’s hands.

“Because the weather is warmer and he’s not wearing a scarf,” Lester replied.  “He was perfectly happy to wear it, show it off, but I convinced him it would be better if he didn’t wear it at work.  I didn’t want things to be uncomfortable for him … or for me, if I’m perfectly honest.”

He  went on quietly.  “He was right, you know, Ryan.  I know you heard so don’t pretend you don’t understand.  I wanted Connor but my position made it impossible to make any type of advances so I watched as he began his relationship with Ryan.  I’d heard bits and pieces of how they came to be together but never heard about Mad Joe or Connor’s sorties into the seedier side of life.  They were happy, and I found myself jealous, so when the call came from the Minister about sending a team out to Siberia, I didn’t stop them when they made the decision to send Cutter, Hart, and … Ryan.  I could probably have stopped them, but I didn’t and when Connor came to me, begging to be allowed to join the team, I told him he was needed here and wouldn’t allow it.  He went to pieces for a while after that, but I just waited and eventually … well, you know the rest.

In some ways, I suppose I was no better than Joe Park.  I wanted Connor and no one was going to stand in my way.”  A small smile played about his lips and he said, “It’s true, you know. Karma is a bitch.”

While he’d been talking, Abby had pulled away just a little and as she listened, her heart was breaking but she had to ask, “Does Connor know?”

“No, he doesn’t.  I never meant for him to find out, and I have a feeling that’s another decision I’m going to come to regret.”

“Connor loves you, James, don’t ever forget that.  There may be consequences to your actions, but never forget that he does love you, and I honestly do not believe that he ever loved Ryan in the same way he loves you.  He asked you to be his Dominant, he wore your collar, and that wasn’t something he’d ever asked of Ryan.  It’s you he trusts, you he loves, hang on to that.” And she moved to once again hold him in her arms.

As Becker stood in the doorway, the sound that came from him made his men stop, startled by the guttural scream that ripped from his throat.   He was on Joe in a heartbeat, punching him again and again until that beautiful face was nothing but a pulpy mess.  It took 6 of his men to pull Becker off and Ditzy yelling for help with Connor, to finally get Becker’s attention.

“He’s alive!” Ditzy yelled.  “Get your arse over here and help me!”

When Connor was released from the chains, his body fell into Becker’s arms, and when he saw his face, beaten and bruised, his beautiful brown eyes swollen shut, it took all his strength to stop himself running back to Mad Joe and finishing what he’d started.  He wanted nothing more than to feel his hands around that man’s throat, choking him, watching the life slowly leave his body, but he knew he had to stay with Connor, had to hold him, keep him alive.  “I’m here,” he whispered.

At his words, Connor managed to lift his hand and touch Becker’s face.  “Don’t leave me,”  he struggled to get the words past his bleeding lips … “Tell James …”

“Hush, you’ll tell him yourself, but now you need to save your strength.  I’ll not leave you, ever.”  At that, Connor’s hand dropped.
