In honor of all those who have served in the military to preserve our freedom, I say “Thank You All!”
Every Memorial Day, families and communities across the nation take time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. Americans observe this special holiday in many different ways.
Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. In 1971 the observance was changed to be the last Monday in May, which would allow for a three-day-weekend and to some the real meaning of the holiday is almost forgotten. That is so sad!
I lost two uncles in the service to our country: Uncle Joe in 1923, and Uncle Gene in 1943 at Anzio Beach in Italy.
My first husband served in the Vietnam War; he was stationed in Hawaii and left from there and I returned home. My second husband served during the Korean War but I did not know him at that time.
Every day I thank the men and women serving, and who have served, on foreign soil to keep our freedom. Thank you one and all ~ and I fly my flag with pride!
