Life with kids...

Jul 12, 2007 14:11

As the mother of an eleven year old and a six year old, I often find things around my house that defy explanation.  Like... the neatly folded wad of toilet paper that had been stapled together and set on the bathroom counter.  And, just because I know my kids, I checked the toilet paper roll, and yes, there was toilet paper stapled back ON to the roll.

I asked.

"We didn't want to waste it," was the answer.

Uh...okay.

There are often things that I find that I don't necessarily WANT an explanation to, that I don't ask, because, really, I don't want to know.  Like... why is there a coffee cup full of sand in my daughter's room?  Or the bowl with a mysteriously congealed substance that might have been food at some time in its lifespan, though I'm not absolutely certain about this, because there is no smell (thank the gods and little green apples!), and yet... it jiggles and I think it winked at me at one point.  And it's under my son's bed.  Or it was, before I removed it.  Sorry, but I'm really not all that supportive of burgeoning civilizations evolving in my house, you know?  A little Clorox will take care of that!  Buh-bye!

I had to stop my daughter from drawing a scar on her brother's forehead with Sharpie markers, though I was secretly impressed.  I mean, she had done at least six thumbnails before deciding on a design, and letting him pick out the colors.

"She can do it!" wailed the Impossible Son.  "I WANT a Harry Potter scar!  I don't care if it won't wash off!  PLease, let her give me a SCAR!!"

There is all kinds of wrong in that sentence!

I said no, and he said, "I don't care!"

I said, "Yeah, but I DO!!"

"Oh."

At this point, especially after the day I had yesterday, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm going to survive the summer.

Oh well, at least we got to see "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" last night.  This was a good thing, and we enjoyed it immensely, though it took some time for the Impossible Son to settle.  He's small for his age, and even though we sat in the very back row, he had a very hard time seeing the screen.  First, he tried sitting in my lap.  Then he tried sitting in his papa's lap.  Then he tried sitting on the seat in the up position.  This was very trying to his soul, and reminded me of my experiences in theaters when I was his age.  Except, when I was little, bouffant hairstyles were in.  Ever tried watching a movie while sitting behind a woman with a beehive hairdo?  When I remember movies from my childhood, I remember them at angles, because I would sit leaning to one side or another to see AROUND someone's big hair.

What ended up working was Mr. Manzie sitting on Papa's shoulders, which is the advantage to sitting in the very last row.  He was very excited.  This was his first time seeing Harry Potter in the theater, and oh, boy, he was excited!

Most excellent movie, though there were things I didn't like.  I'll save that for later though.  My absolute favorite line?  When Umbridge is being dragged away by the centaurs and she said, "Potter!  Tell them I mean them no harm!"

And he looks at her with big, innocent eyes and says, "I'm sorry, Professor, but... I must not tell lies!!"

BOO-yah!!!

I'll wait until everybody has a chance to see it before I start ranting.  Still, I have to say, loved it.  And to my surprise, the Husbandly One wants to see it again!  He NEVER wants to see a movie a second time in the theater.  *absolutely delighted*  This should be FUN!!

Okay, I'm off to see why my kids are being so diabolically quiet.

Oh, and
the_rainbow_jen, she absolutely loved it, squealed, and asked me to thank you, thank you, thank you!

silliness, kids
