Also, discussion of differences between certain scenes and how they are depicted in the show and the book. Since I just finished the book like, three days ago. ( SPOILERS )
Oh, no, I mean ... I'm still pissed off about that. Lots of people who watch the show are still pissed off about that. And will continue to be.
But since the writers didn't seem to think it was a rape scene (even though it was) the narrative doesn't treat it as such, and it's never brought up again. So, narratively, the only way things make sense is to retcon it. Otherwise you're wondering why Cersei isn't having Jaime murdered for what he did to her.
And since in the books it's NOT a rape scene (like, not at all, I was kind of shocked when I read the scene last week. "This is the scene they decided to make a rape scene? WHY!?!?!? It's absolutely consensual!") it won't come up again in the framework either.
So in the world of the story, it's retconned.
In the world of audiences and writers and meta, they need to be held accountable for that.
Nobody's stopping calling it a rape scene, but if the show is going to make any sense at all, the scene needs to be edited out. I think there was a petition going around to have it removed or edited for the DVDs?
Yeah I signed that, HBO were condescending dicks in response, and thanks for the clarification. I know that a lot of people aren't going to ignore it, but I've seen too many that have acted like I said - "I still want to love this show so I'm going to ignore all the sexualized violence problems it has", and for obvious reasons that makes me feel a bit sick.
